XM driving seat for Xantia?

Post by LD »

I've had a long-term plan to replace the driving seat in my Xantia with one from an XM (much more comfy). One has come up on ebay; the question now is – can it be fitted in a way that satisfies current legislation? Here's our correspondence:

Hello Peter,

I think I've finally tracked down an XM driving seat that could replace the
one in my Xantia. It's from this car:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0755096883

I know there was a technical reason why none of your XMs could provide a suitable seat – are there any questions I need to ask before I buy this one?

Also: will there be any problems getting someone to fit it? There's a local
chap who does custom cars, but when I suggested, for instance, welding the top part of my old 504 seat to the base of the Xantia one, he wouldn't do it; because if the weld gave way in an accident, he'd be sued. So I'd be glad of your advice on that point too.

=============================================

Fixings could be a problem due to current legislation, at one time you could just drill some holes in the floor and bolt it in, but not any more, the fittings have to be compatible, whether Xantia and XM fittings are
compatible I don’t know having never owned a Xantia. The other problem is power for the seat adjustments, most XM seats are electric unless you can get them from an SX but there are not many of them about. I like the idea of XM seats in a Xantia - or anything else for that matter but not knowing both cars I don't really know how practical it is. Someone on the french car forum should know I would think.
=============================================

Is anyone able to give me a definitive answer on this? Thanks in advance.

Best of luck but personally I'd say the idea is a non starter as the two seats
are substantially different in both their size/mountings and if electric the
wiring. Have you actually tried all the varieties of Xantia seat as there are
differences between s1 > s2, leather or cloth and certainly any Xant and
Activa seats?

Hi LD

Where abouts are you?
I can find an XM cloth drivers seat FOC if you collect (Hants).
That might prove the easiest way to check out practicality of a swap.

XM driving seat for Xantia?

Post by LD »

You folks don't hang about do you?! Two replies at once then:

To andmcit:

Thanks. Somebody on this forum did once say it could be done, so I'll await further responses. Meanwhile, no I haven't tried seats in a higher-specification Xantia, but would be glad to, as presumably there's then no fitting problem? Does anyone within range of Bournemouth have an Activa I could sit in, to see how I feel?

Also – the Xantia's related to the Peugeot 406; does anyone know whether those seats would fit, and are they any better?

==============================

To xmexclusive:

That's brilliant – yes please! I'm in Poole, Dorset, so anywhere in Hants is easy enough. What do we do next – exchange PMs (private messages)? Not quite sure how those work on this forum, so you may need to remind me.

Yes and no. I've got Mk1 Activa cloth seats in my TD. Will that do? :)

AH HA WEll your ALL WRONG!

I know this because I HAVE done it before!!

An XM Seat WILL do in nicely... HOWEVER theres pitfalls...

ONLY front seats.. Rears DO NOT of course fit.

The Xantia seats runners HAVE to be fitted to the XM seat and they DO..

I cant remember 100% now if the runners attach to the XM Seat height.. but its possibly the height setter and runner from the xantia go directly onto the base of the XNM seat..

The pitfall is that if the XM seat is electric, which most are, you do loose the for and aft slider as thats on the xantia runner, but the recline of the back rest has to remain electric..

I simple attached 12v to the recline and set the back up before I fitted it to the car..

The car I fitted it to was a Series 1 LX with sunroof.. which was the 2nd pitfall.. as the XM seat was firmer, and higher set then the Xantia, my head was in the sunroof (BLOODY THINGS I HATE THEM) all the time, more so then when the Xantia seat was on high.

However, it made the car soooo much more comfy and much nicer to drive.

I never took photos of the process, it was just before I got back on here

The Pretensioner was on the xantia seat runner, though I had to remove that and I fitted a NON air bag seat belt anchor..

All good stuff!

Had to swap it all back when I sold the car on..!

Oh and YES Pug 406 seats DO Fit, Ive seen a Xantia with them in the front..

Two replies in one again:

MikeT:

Please could I keep this in mind as Plan B? I'd like an XM seat if possible, and will follow that up for now; but anything would be better than the ones usually fitted to a TDSX.

=================================

citroenxm:

You must be the person I had in mind as having said this could be done. So questions:

Would you do the work for me? Roughly how much would it cost?

I presume the car would then need a new MOT, and I'd need to inform my insurance company of the change?

Where do you live? I have a feeling you were in north Wales, but it says “new living location”, so maybe you're now closer to me in Poole.

Thanks -

I dont think a seat swap would have anything to do with needing a new mot... As long as the seat is securely fastend to the floor and safe there should be no problem... Im still in north wales... Some distance from you...

I can confirm that the 406 seats are comfortable - much to my surprise because the 405 ones were awful. Mine is a GLX which has electric seats, dont know if the standard one are the same - I'm sure Paul will.

North Wales looks like at least 5 hours' driving, so I'm trying to find someone closer who could undertake this work. Your detailed instructions are extremely helpful, and I shall now be able to prove that it CAN be done!

Many thanks -

Isn't it strange how differently people perceive comfort.

I found my 405 GTX very comfy, the Xantia Exclusive OK but no more, the XM VSX lovely, the C5 about the same as the Xantia but the best of all was my brothers 604 - nice PRV under the hood too.

Don't forget to take some photos of the work if you get a chance.

Steve.

I think the GTX seats are OK but all the standard late 405s had very hard side bolsters which used to give me sciatica.

For me, the Peugeot 504 seats are perfect; in fact everything about the ergonomics of that car is perfect for me (I've had five!). I can drive it for hours without any discomfort whatever. But it doesn't have air-conditioning, it's only a 3-speed automatic, and don't even ask about fuel consumption.

xmexclusive has found an XM seat for me, and speaks very highly of their comfort. He's kindly looking into the practicalities of fitting it into a Xantia, so fingers crossed . . .
