How to dismantle the "knob" on the gear selector?

Post by atr »

On my 2001 Xantia's AL4 gear selector, the "knob" is disintegrating, the outer black layer has fallen apart and now there is the inner core of it. I would like to ask how do I dismantle it from the metall rod that it is installed on, so that I will be able to replace it?
Thanx.

1/4 Turn, left or right, then lift up - Assuming it is the same as the ZF...

Try and score a knob from a 406 - they're leather and much nicer IMO

Unfortunately it's not the way to do it. it doesn't move, to right nor to left, it seems like it is molded on the metal bar but it's not reasonable, so there must be another way.

Needs a fair bit of force to move, mine felt like I was about to snap something.
You'll find that once it gets to the 1/4 mark, it'll be nice and floppy

Mongoose, thanx for your reply and goodwill. in my case, as I found out, all you have to do is to pull it upwards (without turning it). now I have to look for a new knob.

How much force required to lift? Just wondering if the turning step can be avioided

You have to pull it quite hard but I did it with bare hands, without use of any tool, so I think that the 1/4 turn is avoidable.
