Thank you all so much for the help so far. Unfortunately, we're unable to get pictures of either engine (he has no internet access and is 600 miles away). I think he's going to go for the engine we've tracked down though (assuming courier quotes aren't too horrific).

Is there any obvious (and reasonably cheap) that could be changed while the engine is out? I thought a new clutch would be sensible but can't think of anything else....

Thanks again,
Rob

The other obvious will be cam belt and water pump... Be a dream to do while on the flour... Change the cam seal behind the cam shaft sprocket tooo... Clutch a good idea if you may have to swap flywheels... Compare them both and check them...

The rocker cover doesn't look like an XUD - anyone?

Lol.

Thats because its the inlet manifold Peter!! Its a N/a engine, and they have a larger wide plastic manifold ontop of the engine..

Thats a Correct Relay engine, but its NOT an XUD its a DW8... They are almost the same but there could be pump compatability problems, you would need to assume you have to swap the pump and flywheel as I said above... I think the DW8 engine is vurtually the same as the XUD... so I cannot see any problems at all...

I'm sorry to keep dredging this up. My brother has bought an engine (an sold as a XUD 9 from a 1998 Berlingo with the D9B code) but the mechanic fitting it says that it won't fit because the mount on the cambelt side of the engine won't match up. The dead engine is in a 1997 Citroen relay. I have attached a couple of picture, one of the mount in the van and one of the cambelt end of the new engine. I'm baffled by this - I thought that a replacement XUD would go straight in but it seems not. Is this because of the way the engine in the Relay et al is mounted at a different angle? Apologies once again for the ignorance, unfortunately neither me nor my brother know an awful lot about this...

The above link is for the picture of the engine (RIP) in the van

This link is for the engine he has purchased and the mechanic reckons will not go in the van....

It will... That engine mount is completely removable from the engine and the relay mount will go in place of it.... Defo... It may look as though it wont but get voth engines side by side and it will start to fall together.... Well done. So far so good....

Just fill in the form then breakers will contact you with prices :)

Thanks Jabo. The problem had been the enormous cost of getting things sent to the highlands and the seemingly inflated costs of local yards. He's sourced the engine now (£240 including delivery) and the mechanic has been assured it'll fit. The van should be back on thus road by next week...
