ZX 1.4! cambelt failure.

Post by handyman »

Been asked to do a cambelt on a 1.4 XU engine where the pulley wheel failed. I know there will be bent bits inside the head, but does anybody know if it is both inlet and exhaust or just one set?

Checked the archive, but very little details on this lump. Nice car though, no rust and worth saving. May appear here in the for sale forum, once it is up and running.

At a guess i would say you are going to have to replace two exhaust valves, ive done a couple of Saxo snapped belts now and its always the exhaust valves that take it, not a bad job, its a nice little engine really.

XU??? Richard looks like a senior moment

depends on how many revs she had on when she went,

these engines ( TU ) are very easy to work on you dont even need to remove the O/S/F wheel, as it can all be done from under the lid/bonnet,

i do have an AX TU head we had skimed and all valves re/faced/seated never used, its only a 1.0/945??CC not sure what diference's there is/are (valve size??)

Just trying to catch you out there Malc!  'Cors I knew it was a TU engine after I had posted it. I think the 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6 heads are interchangeable. Got any parts in your pile of bits?

Anybody want a nice, rust free ZX?

I had not thought about head interchangeability :)

I would (guess!) the valves might be smaller on the 1.1 compared to the 1.4, maybe the cam profile too (carb / mono / multipoint)

The blocks, well the 1.6 is different in that the 1.6 has a cast block and the smaller units have the liner'ed ones.

T'would appear that the 1.1 (TU1) head and the 1.4 (TU3) heads are one and the same, pt no: 0200V7. The 1.6 XU5 is something else, 0200F2. Citroen Service no longer list valves for these smaller engines, not that I'd buy them at their prices.

Malc, pm sent.

these small PSA car did have a 1.6 TU,

the VTR even the VTS WAS A 1.6 TU BUT WITH TWIN CAM 16V,

i dont belive you cant get valves for the TU lump from citroen, even if they were listed for a later modle,

service citroen is fafing around at the mo, i will try again this eve,

A decent engineering shop / workshop should be able to obtain said valves for you I would expect.

We did have two here but one closed down and the other relocated miles away.

Engine internals should not be a problem as I have a number of different suppliers of components. If it really came down to it, I could even machine up my own from either blanks or larger units. Stainless or titanium? :-k
