Xantia clutch change

Hi , is it a difficult job to change my clutch in my 1997 td Xantia .
Any help greatfully received

I think it depends entirely on how the clutch is used VertVega although they do seem to last pretty well. Off times it is the fact that the clutch is getting very heavy in operation that propmpst a change rather than the clutch itself slipping.

It's a strange quirk that these 'pull' clutches get heavier in operation as they wear. The lightness of a new clutch is almost unbelievable...

Not forgetting of course, that a heavy clutch may be due to the clutch cable going stiff. Surprising how a new clutch cable can transform the clutch, and the "driving experience"

The hardest part of getting the box out of these is trying to get the pin out of the clutch arm when it has'nt been touched in years.

Yes - these pins ARE either a breeze to pull out, or an absolute T_*$T to come out....

The box DOES NOT have to come complete out at all, once you get the gearbox mount spigot out the way, the box when lowered to a comfortable level moves away enough to get the clutch plate and friction plate out... you may need to move it forward slightly to get the alignment tool in.. I happen to have a "Proper" BE Gearbox input shaft for alinment...

However, ML gearbox's in the HDi 110bhp cars are bigger, and theres less room, also the input shaft is bigger so my alinment tool is no good... :?

The 110 model's a different proposition entirely! Once you've got the gearbox free it's pretty easy lifting it clear. Makes lining it up quick and easy. It's not really a heavy box so you might as well take it right out.

WOT!! NOT a heavy BOX!! You must be like Arnold schwarzenegger!!

The ML box is Bloody heavy, and defeantly heavyer then the BE box in the Xantia, which is still a heavy box...

NO! You've misunderstand what I meant. The ML is definitely a heavy box, and awkward with it. I was referring to the BE box which is'nt too bad to lift. Now 6-speed renault pk6 boxes, that's what you call heavy!I need a helping hand with them.

One "trick" used in the trade to assist re-assembly in ensuring the clutch fork is correctly located onto the thrust bearing is to punch a hole in the underside of the bell-housing for observation purposes, not ideal but it could save some frustration.

agree about the be3 not being terribly heavy.. not compared to an 4HP20 autobox at 80 kgs! :twisted:

So what sort of job is this clutch change on the various models of Xantia I.E. in respect of job time (hours) in a workshop, or job time (hours) at home when not having the extra facilities of a workshop I.E. a two post ramp.
I would be interested to find out the information in respect of the models listed below.

(1)T.D
(2) H.D.I.
(3) Activa
(4) V6

Note I have read through this thread, and the connected thread, and links so I appreciate it is a long job, and not easy.
The thing that was missing amongst the very informative, and useful details was a note of how many hours it takes to do.
Thank you to all that answered the threads I mentioned as they made for great reading. 8-)
