Xantia 1.9TD Estate exhaust questions

Post by pete the bus »

Hi,
Just failed an MOT with leaking exhaust, the centre and rear pieces are holed where the two join. The actual back box and cat are fine. I am wondering if there is a difference between the saloon and estate with regard to the exhaust. ie. can i fit a saloon system onto an estate, or are they different? I'm asking as theres a couple of saloons at the local breakers. Also, I see there is a "repair pipe" listed on some sellers web-sites.As my Cat is in good shape this seems to be a possible solution. Does this pipe just slide over the existing old pipe once I have cut the rear piece off?
I'm looking to do this myself as I cant afford the £125 bill I have been quoted.
Many thanks for any info.

Yes, they are different.
Also, you don't need the CAT, so if the £125 is including a CAT, find out what it is for a straight through pipe and how much you can sell the CAT for.

Thanks XAC. Shame they are different, that would have been the easiest and cheapest option. The £125 was for the repair pipe, back box and fitting. The CAT is not included in this option.

the saloon/hatch and estate centre at least for a 1.9TD are exactly the same,

i personaly would buy the equivalent straight through pipe 987-531 which is on the bosal page's below,

then you can sell the cat for scrap and get around £20 quid if its an OE one,

The CAT and centre pipe are all one piece, and the pipe is rotten at the rear end where te clamp fits. So I doubt if the CAT section is of any use now. I have taken the back box off the car completely and had a closer look. The back box can possibly be repaired, and I can get a repair pipe for the centre section. It involves cutting the exhaust pipe off between the CAT and the rear end, and then sliding the repair pipe over this and clamping it. The repair pipe is about £20, and if I can do a rough repair on the backbox then hopefully this will suffice.

Citronut, when you say "sell the CAT for scrap", do you mean sell it as a working item, or that the CAT is worth £20 as simply scrap metal?

depending on how honest your local srap metal merchants are,

they buy dead/scrap pussy's/cats, (no not the 4 leged furry ones MEEEEEOOOOW) for recycyceling,

diferent price depending on OE, after MEER CAT or rattlers/broken inside,

i think i read it here that there is a bunch of dodggy persons steeling them from peoples cars whilst in the suppermarket, you come back to a pussyless car,

A pussyless xantia certainly runs better. Smoother and a good bit better on the fuel consumption. My S2 is averaging out at 45mpg, the last lot worked out at 46.15 mpg. Tank is brimmed so I can see the diesel at top of neck.
Very happy with that.
