ZX heater blower not working

Post by paul in normandy »

The 4 speed heater blower on the ZX (1.9TD) has given up recently.
I have got it all to bits and have located the resistor unit, and the bottom end of the heater fan.
The resistor has got 5 wires going to it, 4 of which all show around 12 volts going to them when the switch is in the 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 positions, but when its reconnected there does not appear to be any current going down to the fan motor.
However connecting the 5th wire, which appears to be the feed to the motor direct to the positive side of the battery (with the ignition off) doesn't make the fan spin either.
2 questions then - is the resistor unit faulty? and how do I check the fan motor in situ (which wire connects to earth - which to live)?

does the car have air con, if not the resistor pack is resonably cheap and easy to change,

have you tried a live and negative feed directly to the motor, one to each of the brush terminals,

No air con.
Worked out how to get the fan motor working - so it must be the resistor, off to the scrappie for one later this am.
Anyone any idea what size the transistor is, so that I can get one from Maplins and repair the old one to have a spare?

Thats the one - got one this am for 5 euros, its such a performance to get the plastic thing in I didn't want to do it twice!
Bet the transistor thing is only a couple of pence from Maplins though!!

it quite easy to get the resistor pack in or out as its just a bayonet fitting,

The resistor is easy enough, its getting the plastic cover back under the bottom of the screen rubber that's a pain in the a**!
