S2 Xantia Horn failing

Post by Diabolical »

My Xantia horn makes a feeble sound when I press it, then no sound when I press again.

Not liking the thought of removing airbag to sort it out, any body got any ideas on what could be the fault and how to go about it.

Probably dirty contacts.

Not sure how accessible they are going to be though.

Don't rule out the fact it might be the horn itself, or possibly dirt in the plug on it.

Its MORE and MOST likely the horn itself and NOT the steering contact..

The air Bag unit has a steal flat contact area around it, in two section seperated by strong springs, the contact is very good as the high current draw from the horn is NOT drawn through it and the contacts operate a relay that passes the power direct to the horn..

My bets are on the horn itself... not the switch.

Location?? Under the Passenger or nearside (UK Cars) wing, behind the inner wing arch liner... forward half around the bumper area.

David, the location of the horn exposes it to water, so it corrodes badly over time. The weak sound suggests yours may be suffering this.

Mine was so bad that when it came time to replace it, I had to use tinsnips to dissect the blasted thing in an unsuccessful attempt to re-use the bracket it is fitted to.

Replacement is simple and should only take an hour, give or take.
There have been a few threads about this very subject lately so perhaps have a search on the forum (airhorns, you know it's the sensible choice - I recommend the Stebel Nautilus for compact loudness) and you should find all the info you need.

Was that this one?

I always fancied the air horns that always seem to be fitted to CX's - are these standard?

Mine are plain black, but I think basically the same model bought on ebay for slightly less than that price but a fair while ago. Highly recommended.

Recently Gingerposer has given the tip about Nautilus air horn. I made a search then and
found this link from the manufacturer's web site where you can listen to the sound samples 8-)

HQ Audio sample NAUTILUS COMPACT SERIES

Check out also the other audio samples.

Nice find VertVega. I only looked at UK prices :(

Tested that and it made me a bit dizzy. I can see it bringing cyclists off their bikes.

A must-have :)

Absolutely

I have installed twin tone horns but it's nothing compared to Stebel.
That'll be my next 'investment'

What about this one --> NAUTILUS COMPACT TRUCK HORN ....

Some did and some didn't - eg 22TRS didn't, but GTi Turbo 2 did.

Also, some Series 1s had 'Town and Country' horns. A quick press on the switch was the standard horn sound, but a longer press activated the airhorns.

Back on-topic with airhorns - you can't beat the twin horns...you could even fit some Maserationes if you want to go up-market!

No time to get round to at mo, but will be removing N/S wing soon to weld hinge bracket bottom of door, so best I leave it 2 jobs at once.

I'm having horn issues now, didn't fancy starting another thread about it so am tacking it on here :)

Basically, the airhorns I fitted to my S2 Xantia a year or so ago have stopped working. No warning, just stopped.
Fuse F7 is intact, as is the inline fuse I fitted when taking a power feed from the battery.
When I press the centre of the wheel to sound the horn, I hear clicking.
Any suggestions where to trouble-shoot next? I have multimeter so can check for voltage at various points.

Answers on a postcard please

Cheers
