RE LEFT FRONT INNER TRACK ROD ENDS
Play develops between the steering rack and the bushes it runs in, an excessive amount will produce a test failure, and if it is causing a knocking then it is definately excessive in my opinion.
My question is, are these bushes in the steering rack replaceable.

They are replacable but not by yourself or even a dealer, they don't repair down to this level, this sort of thing is done by specialist remanufacturing outfits with the machinery and parts to do it.
The racks available to buy on the shelf from motor factors or whatever are remanufactured, the cost of new would be out of reach of most people, and since the rack has worn out it means the car has covered a high mileage, nobody would want to fork out for new on such old high milers.

looks like a new (recon) rack then. But as the car has 12 months ticket on it know, I will run it like this until the next mot as there is no play at the wheels what so ever and really its just an annoying knock that can be felt through the steering wheel.[:(]

Just a thought - have you peeled back the gaiter and seen if there is plenty of grease at the rod end? If its dried out or the grease has gone hard you may be able to improve things with fresh grease.

I'm probably way off the mark because I have zilch experience with this model, but on a BX I had, there was a knock in the steering that was there from when I bought the car.
Strangely(?) enough, the guy who gave it a RWC (MOT) found nothing when I bought the car (previous owner paying for the job) but picked up this "potentially dangerous; has to be replaced" job when I sold the car (when I was paying for the job.) [:(][B)]
It turned out that the "rack end" needed replacing. This rack end hides inside the gaitor, is a ball joint & is held in by a nut, lock nut, serrated locking plate & most of this is hidden within a pale blue epoxy material that has to be chiselled out to access it. Once out, it's a simple task to replace it.
The guy working on my car, a fairly experienced mechanic but not one experienced in Citroens, firstly made the comment that it appeared as though the 'rack was gone' but found this on closer inspection & took about a half hour to replace it.
I'm not arguing with the diagnosis of Dave, but could it be possible that this is the problem and not the actual rack and/or its bushes? The reason being, if it's a similar set up, it's real easy to mistake one for the other, and as I discovered, can easily be overlooked as my was mine at MOT time (first trip) but subsequently found at the second. If it comes apart, there's pretty dire consequences!

Sounds like this has already been changed on this ZX. The "rack end" is also referred to as the "inner track rod end" or indeed, the Axial Joint as I generally call it. If I'm reading all the above correctly?
Reading the other posts on this matter by Citman it sounds like these have already been replaced. I would say though, that there has to be some play in the axial joint (up and down)obviously the thing needs to move with the cars suspension. Side to side movement is unacceptable.
Citman, I did send you an email via the Forum a couple of weeks ago suggesting an Independant Cit Specialist near you who is a friend of mine who could check this out, did you get that email?

hi john
I didnt receive your email because i have changed my email address its know citman_11_80@yahoo.co.uk. Do you mind sending it me again. I have also sent you an email as well.
I took the car to a citroen specialist yesterday in which I stopped using because I felt silly keep taking the car back with one problem after another so I took it elsewhere. They always seem to be willing to help. But would be grateful if you could send me that citroen specialist who is a friend of yours.
Thanks a lot for your help
Jon
