New member, just bought a Xantia

Post by Mdon »

Hi All, I am moving jobs and need a car to do 10,000 miles in 17 weeks while I train. I bought a 2000 X reg Xantia 2.0 HDi 90bhp last weekend as I know there the last of the good old workhorses. it has been extreamly well looked after with only 78,000 miles on the clock. The service book says it had 4 new spheres fitted 3 years ago at 58,000 miles.

I had a new timing belt fitted last night and after the car had been on the car lift the rear suspension has gone a bit funny! it is sitting a little low now in normaly drive mode and won't sink any lower when you put it into service mode, it also won't raise when you put it in the hightened mode, however it will rise fully when in wheel change mode. The front suspension moves to all modes correctly. it's only the rear thats a slight problem. Anyone know whats wrong with it? as I say it was fine until it was jacked up by the car lift.

Cheers

Mike.

Sounds like another case of a popped off dog bone. A simple fix to put it back but ideally the rear height corrector should be removed and loosened up with plenty of lube spray and wiggling. There is plenty of information on this if you do a search.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Sorry for being lazy but I've search for 'dog bone' and it returned almost 240 threads. I've read 5 now and they all seem to point the dog bone however they don't say what it looks like. can you describe what it looks like and exactly where to find it? I know it's on the rear axle.

Apologies if I sound a bit dim however I have never had a car with this suspension. I have had a C5 however that was a sealed unit and never had to lay hands on it.

 THAT CAR WAS SUPPOSED TO BE MINE!

You beat me to it. It was on the one in Bristol on Ebay I believe.

Well done! I cogitated too long over whether it was worth an 150 mile trip to view - DAMN!

Please don't abuse it! We can come to some arrangement. You could use my Xantia for 10000 miles and I'll buy the HDi off you. Only joking, I'm looking for a lower mileage example now.

Anyway, here is a picture of the stud that the dog bone pushes onto:-

Image

If you stand with back of your head touching offside tyre looking towards nearside tyre that is the orientation of this photo (rotated so that the stud on the photo is pointing towards the floor). Hope that makes sense!

Stud is just above centre in the photo.

If you have the car on ramps looking up at the underside, this stud would be pointing down with height corrector nearer to rear of car.

Trace height corrector rod from gear lever area on underside of car back to rear to car. The 'dog bone' connects to this lever (lower centre in photo) that the rod is attached to. It is white plastic but probably black with dirt. It will have come one either stud.

The other stud is connected to a clamp on the rear anti-roll bar.

I bought it from rochdale off autotrader. If it was the one you were looking at sorry but you have missed a really good car :) the interior is like brand new!

Cheers for the replies guys, I'm going to tackle it on sunday. I let you know how much of a mess I make.

Damn! My father is currently using my Activa, and expressed an interest in buying it (which ISN'T going to happen!). If I'd known a HDi was nearby, I might have had a look for him.

Anyhow, if you're local and need a Lexia session, give me a shout.

In that case, no! The one I was going to go and look at was in Bristol.

Guy took £925 for it.

Hi all,

just a quick update, I've finally had a go at the rear height controller. I decided to enlist the help of my step dad as he used to have an old BX. when we got the old girl on axle stands we found the HC was almost seized! I couldn't figure out how to remove it so instead just gave a good dose of WD40 and with a bit of a helping had from a large screw driver and a mallet I managed loosen it and after moving it back and forth several dozen times I have freed it up and applied loads of machine grease and now it seems to work superb. It now corrects it's self when loaded up in the back and moves through all settings and even rises level (i.e. front and rear lift at the same time!)

I'm now well chuffed with it and hopefully it will perform well on the motorway next week as I start my first of many long journeys over the next 6 months.

Well done.. good work.. Its always the linkages..

The BX and XM;s NEVER suffer this problem as they had a different linkage setup....

Its a poor idea for a VERY Superior car..

A tip for you, keep on top of it now, it wont harm to keep dousing it once a week or fourtnight too keep it lubricated untill its well free...
