Xantia coolant/temperature STOP warning

Post by redzzed »

Xantia 1997 1.9 td a/c
The red STOP warning light comes on after a while , usually before this the yellow 'temperature warning' light on the dashboard comes on.
The temp gauge goes up to 70 degrees C but no higher and the coolant is full up to the mark.(the water is brownish and a little has oozed out).

the car continues running normally , no steam etc.

I'm hoping that this is a thermostat prob or sensor error.

Anyone know ? i can't really afford any big fixes.
I don't seem to have any leaks , the car has air conditioning , which i don't use .

This happened first about 3 weeks ago on the motorway on a cold rainy night and i stopped and put about 1/2 pint of apple juice in , which was the only fluid i had , and the light went out .

any advice welcomed thx .
has anyone else had this problem

Happens to Cassy now and again, most likely a dodgy earth, but I believe if the rad fans are misbehaving it can also bring the stop light on.
Idle the car, turn the A/C on and the fans should spin slow, keep idling until they kick in fast and see how they're doing.

The connections on the temperatur sensor can go crusty, all my XMs have had this problem intermittently, I sometimes get an 'overheating' warning when I have just started it! Providing the temp gauge reads OK I ignore it.

the jpg you used to have as your avatar hasn't existed for quite a while, so now we've activated the new 404 error image, your avatar being missing was causing a 404 error, and so showing the image.
Now your avatar link has been cleared there won't be a problem.

Thx for the replies .
i started it today and left it running with the ac on , the warning came on later .The temp went up to 90 degrees , but by now the STOP and yellow
lights had gone out again , and also the fans had not cut in .

I took it out down the road for about 4 miles and the temp went down to 70 again and the warnings came on again , but went off after a few mins .

I'm going to risk it for a week and see how things go , i have an 80 mile drive tomorrow .

sorry about the avatars
