Xantia radiator interchangeability

Post by XantiaMan »

My Activa has its original rad, looking a bit crummy but not leaking yet, so looking for a replacement.

Will a 1.9TD rad be ok spec wise, as well as fit ? I'm sure they are dimensional identical and should be ok keeping it cool.

The Activa rad is the same as the 2.1TD rad Gareth...

I have a 1.9TD rad here and a new 2.1TD rad so could compare for you...

I don't believe the difference is very much.. Possibly...

Its not just the size that has to be the same, the plumbing has to match too.

When I last bought a Xantia radiator, there are different types, depending on whether you have air-con or not, whether you have an automatic gearbox not to mention the various different engines.

Activa and 2.1TD rads have those funny push connections, where 1.9TD's have the more normal interference fit with a clip for good measure style of connection.

I suppose you could change the hoses if you needed to but it's more faffing about.

Later 1.9TDs had the same bayonet connections as well Dom.

You're lucky (very lucky!) if you have a 1.9TD with the early circlip fittings...

yep agree later TD's were bayonets..

I have put an early TD rad in mine S2, and gone back to hose clips  the rad is a tiny bit loose, as the AC radiator is slighty different from memory (and therefore the top rad spring clips dont reach far enough), but its all fine, if I was bothered I would make a job of securing the top of the radiator but it's really not a problem

Talking of loose, I replaced Juliet's with a 406 TCT's, and it's wider which made fitting interesting as the pegs along the bottom don't line up with the holes.
Does seem to do a good job of keeping her cool though, and it was £20, only 2 weeks old, from a scrapped 406 who's owner had done up only to have the local kids trash :(

Ah ha! BUT, Bayonet Rads CAN be changed for "Proper " Rads, you need, the Rad, and the TOP hose and bottom hoses!

The shape of the Intercooler outlet on the left (Drivers) side is a different shape on much later ones, and it can interfear with the middle small outlet spigot that goes to the oil cooler... but its all possible up do an "Upgrade" to the older rads!

I of course know this, because Ive done it... Having pleanty of Series 2 early pipe work about.

EDIT**: EXACTLY what John G has done, !!!

Ah fair enough, my late s1 1.9TD has the normal clip fittings, but the 2.1TD and Activa both have the bayonet fittings.

Is there an advantage at any point to the bayonet fittings? IE speed while building the car or something? I can't see the point to them.

Nope, not a nuisance! At least not to Pierre when he made the car for you..

It makes assembly on the factory lime a lot easier. Sod how difficult it is for us later

I'm just off out to the stash-house to dig out a 1.9TD rad and lay it against a genuine Activa rad...

I'll be back shortly... I'll be feeling like Scott of the Antarctic out there this evening...
