New Xantia owner advice required

Post by redzzed »

Hi All , i have a 1997 R reg xantia 1.9td sx which is giving about 41 mpg , should i be happy with this or can i get the 50 i was getting with my zx td memphis/volcanes ?
It runs on diesel/veg oil although the fuel pump does not look exactly like the bosche in the hayes manual.

Next question , i ran over a hard bump on an unlit 2nd class road and the
suspension hasn't liked it and seems rigid , probably from the back.Previously the susp. was fine. The car now rocks like a seesaw .
Do i need new spheres or just a repair .
thanks in advance

dave
(my last zx got burned out by vandals once i got it running nicely and i couldnt find another , so i got this xantia )
current : 1997 xantia 1.9 td sx a/c
previous cars :
1997 zx memphis td
1996 zx volcane td
1994 zx volcane td

41mpg from a Late Xantia XUD is Very Good, and about right! The Xantia is nothing like the ZX at all! The Xantia is sooooo much better built, and a much heavyer car, which the XUD has to lug around. The ZX is rather lightweight..

As for the suspension issue, Ive never experianced this so not sure what to comment.

Paul practically lives in his Xant diesel so he'd know! I can't really live with
them usually caning them hard due to my lead foot and impatience but would
say I can never get lower than about 30mpg on my estates. 41 sounds OK
- is it a saloon?

What results do you get with a deflection corner bounce test by hand?

I've seen a rear ram hit a bad deflection and it's ram bell out on the end of it's
piston and subsequently drag and score back and fro ruining the piston. This
has the effect of holding that corner of the car fairly rigid to the point that it
won't sink or change height even when provoked with the lever [it will but not
willingly]. This would have the effect of a seesaw pitching effect along the car.

It's most likely to be the rear but the front could still have strut damage in
the piston. Ultimately, the way to determine free movement of all corners is to
safely support the car with either end of the car off the floor and no pressure
in the suspension and try moving the wheels by hand. It'll certainly be
interesting to see what finding this yields.

41mpg is reasonable. Largely depends how you drive, of course.

My Accufuel app on my iPhone shows I've averaged 41mpg for the last few months. Before that I was getting 45mpg and, wait for it, once did 870 miles on a full tank. We should have a leaderboard on the forum.

On a manual 1.9TD, the manufacturer's figures are 37.2 Urban and 53.5 mpg Extra Urban and somewhere around 38 on motorway.

You should be able to achieve 45mpg driving steady by not exceeding 2500-3000 rpm in any gear. Of course, you need to mix this with good anticipation and foresight, etceteras.

We've recently come back from Austria. I was hoping to do 1000 miles on a tank. No chance! Especially in the winter or on motorways.

We averaged 40.8mpg in mountains, high altitude general driving and autobahns at 122mph warp factor 9 (when conditions permitted). So still above the Urban and Motorway recommendations for a 14 year old 1.9TD SX. All in all, pretty pleased with that figure.

1000 mile tank to be achieved in the summer! Watch this space!

PS Welcome aboard!

Also, your pump is probably Roto-Diesel! I think mine is.

ROTO Diesel?? That would be a Bosch Semi electronic pump on the 1997 Xantia XUD TD...

I HAVE to live in any Derv because I do a 50 mile round trip a day, on just over minimum wage in a thin on the ground job area.. Im happy, but unfortunally cannot even dream of affordding 25mpg economy... and of course the stupid robbing high prices..

Bio diesel is my next experiment when I get organised..

My apologies! Does this my my '96 will be a Bosch Semi too? Must say I have never cleaned or looked at pictures in a Xantia BoL manual but it doesn't like anything like the Bosch pump I had on my old BX!

Or is my age and failing memory telling me the reverse.

I'm not sure so I'll just shut up! (BCOA)

I get 46mpg out of my 1.9TD Xantia, however I don't drive it hard.

As paul said, they are much heavier than a ZX, I use to own a peugeot 306 1.9TD which was much quicker off the mark, and used to get nearer 50mpg.

It will be semi electronic ONLY if you have a Keypad to enter a 4 digit code before starting....

I hit a hump in Stoke with my Xantia, and reset the front ride height (clamp not properly tightened), which made the front end hard.

Does your car look the right height

Where are you?

Malcolm.

I may be wrong again but I know I had a pump renewed on a BX because I have only ever had one Xantia and the rest various BX's.

I'm pretty sure!

Is there a 'Shot down in Flames!' Emoticon anywhere?

I had a BX TD with a Bosch pump - and my sister had a BX 1.9D with a Bosch pump....

AFAIK all Xantia 1.9TDs had Bosch pumps - they're easily ID'd by the big flying saucer boost compensator on the top. Early ones were fully mechanical, later ones had ECU control of advance. Keypad is not directly related to ECU presence - I had a 97 VSX TD with keypad and mechanical pump. ECU presence signified by EML on dash and wire coming off No 3 injector.
