I am so flabbergasted at no oil in the engine.

Xac,

thats very odd somebody must have been given 6 points a tyre at some point as I was told by a local bobby it was about to chang to six points a tyre back in August last year, unless different counties are doing different things? strange??? he didnt say anything about a fine.

Im pretty sure its 3 points per tyre and a maximum fine of £2500 for each one.

6 points would a be bit steep, but there is no reason to be running a car with bald tyres, so 6 points per tyre would be entirely justified.

I'd argue it's better to chop the offending tyres. The effect is immediate; car is unusable and they'll have to fit something legally saleable.

Cheaper than a fine, too - so while it might seem a little mean it's easier on the pocket and achieves the same result faster...

My ex girlfriends mum had a 2007 Peugeot 307 hdi, I remember my gf at the time telling me tha the on board computer thing had beeped, and come up with a message about low or no oil level when they where visiting people about 30 miles away......her parents did not add any oil, and just drove the 30 or so miles back home along the motorway....then carried on driving it for a few days after that as it was 'due a service anyway' and she got it booked in for a service like the following week, still driving the car around with no/low oil! Stupid women.

I think its a lack of knowledge that is the problem, if they knew what damage it might and will cause they would top it up im sure.

However if the car has used most of its oil between services then there is probably something wrong. Unless its services are few and far between.

Some engines use oil, almost "invisibly" - it doesn't show up as a fouled converter or sooty exhaust. The Alfa Twin Spark is one such motor.

Yes, some engines do, but the HDis as mentioned above shouldn't, I check my oil level regularly and never have to top up between my 6K service intervals. So even at the 12K interval it shoudn't need much, though if its on 20k ...

Can I just remind everyone that too much engine oil can be bad too. Can cause a small fire, which might make the men travelling in the car consider weeing on the fire to put it out.

I've had 3 coppers trying to come up with what the tread depth should be on my motorbike via comittee before, none of them actually knew, which shows you how the police aren't lawyers despite being the ones enforcing the law.
A single bald tyre can get you disqualified for driving though, at the decision of the court.

Too much oil in a TD xantia is interesting round a corner too, when the oil gets into the combustion chambers.. :D

I try to keep on top of vehicle maintenance but it's tricky with 5 with a combined age of 86 .. the problem these days - the more I know about cars, the more I think it's going to go wrong on the dark road in the snow... ignorance is [was] bliss

The owners of any 1.9CDTI Vauxhall or Fiat will know all about too much oil, as those engines fill up as the miles go by. Diesel mixes with the oil and increases the oil level. There is even another mark on the dipstick to show when the oil needs to be changed, i.e when there is too much oil/fuel in the sump.

Some cars have been known to drown as the owners didnt keep check on the oil increasing.

Im very tough with servicing, every 6k or 6 months i tend to do mine. I do car check either weekly or every other week, depending on how many miles im doing in the week or two. Though I do have to check over the family fleet too, which takes ages! Though a least I know they are all as they should be, which is peace of mind.
