steering rack

have r reg 2.1 xantia, got bad steering shake, tyres look ok but have some play in rack where the rod that holds the track rod end goes into the rack. can it be shimmed or is it a replace job

The rod that holds the track rod end? If you mean the track / rod tie rod itself
where the play is seen on the inboard end where it meets the rack then the
knuckle on that is shot not the rack.

There is a locking washer between the inboard knuckle and some kits are sold
with it so check around on ebay. As far as shimming goes I wouldn't expect
anything like that to work. For the money involved a replacement is the way
forwards.

These are cheap enough, even GSF ECP etc and so long as you don't knock
out the tracking wheel alignment all ahould be well.

Febi brand stuff seems heavily discounted from time to time.

It's worth getting the lower balljoints looked at; they can wear and also induce shake but it's hard for the amateur to investigate levels of play, due to preload.

Yet more shudder can come from driveshaft CV wear or dryness.

thanks addo, it's a bad steering wheel wobble like wheels need balancing, as there is lots of play where rod goes into the rack i will try replacing that first, thanks
