I had a set done superbly by a very pernikety wheel refurb guy that was
exacting in getting TOTAL originality and the milled marks on the front raised
faces. I recall he was thrilled when I asked for the relief lines in the pattern
to be retained in the original grey. Problem was the corrosion had eaten into
the alloy and flowered out again from underneath the baked lacquer.

I'd recommened the guy though if he's even still there - located near
Sunderland airport many moons ago now.

Getting the visually nice but PITA pukka Michelins just isn't worth it. Especially
when the mileage out of them is so poor with the front of any Cx being so
heavy on it's tyres - the opposite is true of course on the rears so it balances
out a bit I suppose.

That is the Nissan factory now :(

I'll ask around see if anyone knows of him - good workers usually generate a reputation that gets fairly wide spread.

Are you from around here originally then Andrew?

I was going to say it wasn't THAT long ago but I guess it was! Sometime in
'92ish... time does fly. It was a a small workshop near the periphery
of the airport fencing. The name S.E.M wheels rings a distant chime. I have
family north of Newcastle and have spent many years running between there
and South Wales and called into this wheel refurb guy as he was highly
recommended by some garages in Newcastle at the time. Every chance he's
long gone now.

<edit> forgot to answer the main question - yes, born in Ashington T&W.

...we have a very good chap that does the Turbo wheels very well, but you can't beat the original ones.

Yep, the Michelins are eye-wateringly expensive (£250 per corner), but if they were wrong on CGOO it just wouldn't be right somehow.
...wear isn't an issue really either as it doesn't get used that much.

Forgot the bolts!

I've seen the Xantia use x2 main design types (as does the Xm too), although
there is a subtlety that could be significant to the alloy bolts where they look
almost identical but aren't!

All x3 types are M12 with a 1.25 pitch metric fine thread with a 19mm hex head.

Steel Wheel:
Image

Standard Alloy Wheel - square shoulder:
Image

Alternate Alloy Wheel - tapered shoulder:
Image

The MAIN key significant difference is the 60 degree shoulder seen on steel rims
AND the flat/square captive washer type as seen on the alloy rims. The main
thing to be aware of here with the two types is they aren't interchangeable and
cannot work if you try swapping between them - the 60 degree ones are shorter
and won't reach into the hub

The same follows with the square shoulder bolts being too long and going too
far into the hub and damaging it as the run out of the thread near the hex head
then damages the thread by burring it off. Don't ask me how I know and don't
try these even in an emergency flat/wheel swap.

The slight extra element of confusion arises where I have seen the hybrid midway
on a couple of VSX alloy rims where they are usually designed with a square shoulder
yet have a tapered 60 degree taper and marginally longer bolts than the steel variety.
Good old Citroen although there's no knowing what previous owners and garages get
up to so it may not be their fault!

The locking bolts if you're daft enough (or unlucky) to still have them fitted usually
come as x2 designs. The first is a kind of shaved edges hex and the second uses
x4 very fragile pins that engage in the corresponding cut out holes in a rough plough
star constellation styley in the head of the shorter headed bolt:

Image

I will post the other pin design type when I find one to picture. I've had to have x3
sets of alloy wheel bolts removed by garages with an alloy wheel bolt remover tool
as the original owners have lost the key...

An excellent thread Andrew :-D

Another slightly odd one:

S2 Exclusive wheels with centres! Notice its LHD (currently on UK ebay).

Also, I saw a foreign XM with centre-less wobbly webs.

Cheers Chris! My father has solid centre wobbly webs on the W plate 2.1TD
BTW - that's an Alwick car so sometime in the past you may have seen it about!):

Image

Looking through the picture gallery on photobucket, these trims popped out,
moons ago now I recall these being offered on the accessories rack at my local
Cit Prat's counter - weren't they for Xantia/Xsara?:

Image

Some of this always crops up on the forum especially the spec to fit alternate
wheels so it's worth putting this in too:

Image

Finally, excuse here for gratuitous plug for nice picture of my early v6 s1 alloys:

Image

Handbrake testing!? I may add, the guy in the flash black car parked beside me
after I'd parked and this was a long way away from the rabble of muppets in the
people carriers and plastic tea trays - ie. away from harm. Doubt he was taking
pictures of his car with the v6 in the background but I'd just bought it and was
driving it home and liked the sunset in the reflections. :D

These were an accessorie available from the dealer oddly named 'sport' wheel trims - my old CX Reflex had them instead of the small hubcaps.

Also, I have a xantia alloys question: I have a set of the Belfast 15" wheels and still have a mystery 'wheel balance' vibration that I can't resolve. I have one spare alloy too that looks in very good condition but it is actually different to the other 4. The spare has a deeper center boss so needs longer bolts and will sit out wider. Does anyone know why it is different?

I've got a set of Peugeot 406 16 inch Nimrod alloys on my S1 Xantia. I really like the look of them.
No I don't have a photo, but will take one if anyone interested :)

aerodynamica, I'm not sure why that would be :?

Are they all the same style of alloy wheel but one has a different offset? Seems odd

That would be interesting. Ive seen a few Xantias on 16" C5 wheels but not on the Peugeot Nimrods. What size tyres do you use?

Hi Chris, yes, they're all belfasts but one has a larger offset. I was keen on fitting it as I think the mad problem of steering wheel wobble is caused by one or more of the presently fitted wheels. I still haven't confirmed that though.

I bought the wheels complete with tyres on ebay. They'd come straight off a 406. Standard size tyres on these rims on the 406 is 205/55/16.

I'll be dropping to a lower profile when the tyres are shot ... either a 50 or a 45.
