Xantia 2.0hdi hydraulic pump sounds like a bunch of hammers

Post by jimmydod »

Hi, today checked out auxilliary drive belt fitted a new one, no longer slipping but above pump souds like a multi hammer forge. has anyone had any experience with overhaulig, or buying and fitting a recon; if so were did you get repair kit, or recon pump.
Kind regards to all.

Hi Jim,

the hydraulic pumps do sometimes get loud. Due maybe to the hydraulics
being run for a long while with flat spheres thus shocking the system on a
more permanent pressure stroke or possibly even the belt being overtightened.

AFAIK there's no refurb seal kit but a swap with a secondhand unit should do
the trick; obviously with as close a like for like alternative although really the
main difference will be whether your car is 5/6 sphers hydropnuematic LX/SX
spec or a hydractive 8 sphere VSX/Athena/Exclusive car.

The pump easily comes apart and is quite straightforward in it's design
with one central offset cam acting onto 6 small pistons and it's construction
mainly relies on o rings:

IIRC, the one pictured is a rarer early series off a sinker.

Interesting - I've not had one apart, and assumed it was a compact swash plate design with the three "towers" being poppet valves.

The early (DS, CX and so on) ones I believe had the swashplate arrangement Adam.

The pumps can sound loud on a petrol car when working hard. What's your regulator tick rate like Jim? Less then 30 seconds and the accumulator sphere would be gravely suspect.

Normal noise you can hear on a quiet petrol is silence followed by a series of loud heartbeats (almost like soft machine gun fire) for a second or so as the regulator cuts in and then silence again for at least 30s as the regulator cuts out and the pump idles.

Many thanks to all your replies, just like to add had 6 new spheres in Sept and lhm replaced. On return from Plaedies in Sawtry who did the job the compound crankshaft pulley decided to partially dissintegrate had a new one fitted everything was then fine untill gradually belt started to slip and pump got louder and louder; only on startup and only at tickover. Will try and obtain another pump. Do the pipe connections have rubber seals or are they of the swaged bundy type seals. Many thanks for all your help it is much appreciated.

They make some pretty horibble noises if they are sucking air. I'd check that there isn't a hole in the suction hose first. A check that the filters are not totally clogged would be worthwhile too.
