It does require a mod to the wiring but not £140 worth.
It is possible to do it yourself in about twenty minutes. You need a bit of fairly fine sheathed wire, some black tape and a soldering iron.
I was too lazy for that and had an auto-electrician do it while he recharged mine and my son's aircon systems, £110 for the works.

Given that the tailgate wiring mod was required on 2001 cars I would have expected that by the time we had got to facelift models that particular problem would have been resolved at manufacture.

I suspect that the problem may be as simple as a duff switch or switch actuator failures of both are quite common.

Of course I could be wrong on both counts :-)

I was with Citroen UK on motoring journalism type work assignments a few months ago and, while I was there, I photographed the tyre pressure sensor changing procedure being performed on my own 56 plate Exclusive estate. I also asked the technicans about the S2 C5, including the tailgate glass.

I was told that the earliest cars used to open their tailgates randomly; it even happened on the C5 UK launch! This was caused by not only the switch being too sensitive but also the wires used to short circuit, due to water creaping in. The cure was to apply a seal over the wires, which can be seen when you open the glass and look along the bottom.

The non-opening can be due to the wires breaking and I believe this problem is carried over on the S2 from the S1. There is a DIY fix on the T'interwebnet.

Hope this helps.

Excellent instructions seroyen!
Far better than the ones I found but can't find again.

You might post that link in the How To forum. Just made for it :)

I think my switch is dead now as it doesn't work but the glass section opens at random.

Hello there and thanks for the heads up!

However those are not my instructions! I stumbled upon it on Google while trying to find instructions on how to separate my rear door trim.

Hope it has been useful though! :)

Yes, I realise that but you can still post the link, as long as you don't claim ownership.
