New one may be a direct drive starter with field coils. Did it have big countersunk screws on the body of the starter?

i use a half innch drive ratchet with a short extention to overcome the one bolt above the clutch lever,

Hi Malcolm, might be the length of the hex bit on mine. The body of the key driver was over the clutch lever.
