Ive kept a good selection of Caps for these types of hic ups...

Ive never in the 4 or so I done simply stuck a cap on and go!! I always lower the pistons to half bore, and with a 16mm spanner on the belt end with the sprocket bolt in the end, turned the cam to "Test" the tightness!!!

Then once slack enough continued!

Head gaskets are expensive for XUD's now as they are of Laminated type only! At around 38 quid or so, Id do upmost to prevent removing the head if I didn't have to...

Oh I know. I do remember my 205 headgasket (just that gasket) was about £45 or there about's and that was at least five years ago now.

Did not fancy risking pattern one at half the cost as its (as you know not difficult) just a pain to redo it. :)

Had a quick thought:
As I'm going to be swapping the camshaft out from another head, will it also be worth swapping the buckets and shims over?
I did have a quick go on the two sets of cams with some calipers (or rather one set of cams and a broken section of another) and found the lobes are basically the same size to within a DP or so...although my calipers aren't the most reliable of things since they got soaked in energy drink some time ago

Thanks

agree with Paul.. :D

Alex, check the camshaft is from the same type of engine, eg turbo or non turbo as I think they are different..

good luck, think she'll be fine / would leave the shims and buckets all well alone, but do check the valve clearances while your there..

Definitely the same engine, the old head came off the car in question when some serious overheatage cracked it.

The BoL has the specified clearances in it, shall make sure they're good before running it.

Alex

I ressurrected my 1.9TD from a similar catastrophe. With mine 7 out of the 8 valves were fine, the one nearest the cambelt end failed the push down test and took a fair bit of drifting out when I removed the head.

My solution was a replacement head from my "spares" xantia and so far so good. I found my local scrapyard wanting £40 for a camshaft and associated bits.

If you want to read the tale its pretty much covered here:-

Xantia broken camshaft 0 Newcastle Falcon 1

Defenatly check the Valve clearences, and the MOST likely one to need re-shimming is the one that kissed the cam! Always!

15 thou for Inlet, 30 thou for Exhaust, in INLET EXHAUST EXHAUST INLET INLET EXHAUST EXHAUST INLET order from cambelt to gearbox....

And thats without the BoL! How bad is that!  :o

Bit of an update:
Good news and annoying news.

Good news is that all the valves passed the screwdriver test and, with the "new" camshaft fitted, everything turned nicely as it should. Clearances are off however, will try swapping the buckets and shims next week to see if that helps at all.

Annoying news: firstly, plastigauge not arrived in the post yet
And secondly, when I removed the brake vacuum pump from the camshaft, I observed two pieces of metal fall out of it that should have been one piece and probably shouldn't have fallen out.

Will investigate next week as to whether or not the pump itself is buggered.

Took a photo of the bit but left my camera in Kent, so I knocked up a model from memory in SolidWorks:

Image

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

It appears to be the bit that mates with the camshaft
Anyone know if these bits can be replaced?

Hoping I don't need a new pump, those little bleeders are expensive.

Ahh thats a bugger RE: Pump, but excellent on the valves!!!

You'll always need to redo the valve clearences -

I dont think I have a Vac pump spare, I may have though, but im uncertain.. (Dont help you much, I guess)

That bit is not shown separately on service.citroen, but that's not to say it can't be repaired!

Hoping the vac pump is ok, will fiddle around with it on Saturday.

Something else I noticed and forgot about until just now: the water pump that I pulled off my engine seemed to be of considerably better quality than the one I replaced it with.
I bought a Motaquip pump thinking "they're owned by PSA, so it's probably like buying a Citroen part without Citroen written on it". Apparently that's not the case.
When I persuaded the old pump off my engine, I was half expecting a rusty lump of cack where an impeller once was. The impeller on the Motaquip pump is one of the cast iron jobbies that basically looks like a water wheel. The old one (which I'm guessing is probably the original one fitted by Citroen) had a really quite beautifully machined bronze-looking impeller with pukka curvey vanes and everything.

I did take a comparison picture...but again, camera in Maidstone :D

Was almost a shame to put the new one in there, ah well it'll probably do.

Update time!

After waiting weeks for parts, and a couple of days of getting mucky and annoyed, the car coughed and spluttered back to life! Still a couple of things to do, such as reattatching the wheel arch liner and finding another top timing cover part (god knows where that went).

Survived the trip back to Ashford with no issue, Ashford to Brighton run sometime soon. Wish me luck :D

Thanks to all who gave some helpful tips along the way.

Hehe all the work I've done to this beast, it'll have to be creative if it wants to break something again...
