Indeed that is my experience of these telltales

They tell untrue tales

I think we are missing the main point that the topic's battery capacity and this vehicle specifications do not match.
Even if this battery is a brand new one, it is not specified for a powerful diesel engine car.
It might be good for, lets say a 1.4 petrol, without aircon and electric consuming gadgets.
The green indicator might be seen even for some lower Cold-Start current values.
It can still start a car with a small engine, on a cold day.

Here's the link from Exide: ---> Battery Solutions - Selection <---
(Similar pages and catalogues are availble from Bosch, Varta and etc.)
In above link,
Try (2) - E-Catalogue, to find the batteries specified your vehicle
or
Try (3) - Selector, to find battery for your driving needs where
selection is made according to Engine size, Equipment, Climate and Driving conditions.

Yes but it may not be the battery causing the problem. I had similar symptoms with my car, fitted with a correct spec battery, but it turned out to be a faulty starter motor.

Might be a good idea to measure the battery terminal volts when starting and also the volts at the starter terminal. Should be around 9-10.5 volts when starting, could be lower with an underrated battery. If that is the voltage on starting then it could be the starter or an earth.

I do agree though that the battery should be the correct rating.
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

Diesels require a lot more starting current than petrols, regardless of how new or good the battery is, if it can't provide enough amps, it won't start, or at least not easily, with the result that the battery is much more discharged at every start than if it started easily, which in turn considerably shortens its life.

Put a proper diesel battery on it and hang on to the other one for emergencies, or give it to someone for their petrol motor.

The C5 HDI diesel takes an 096 72AH 640-680 CCA I'd imagine to be safe the Xantia would be the same, I know I fitted one in my last Xantia and it was only the 1.9TD

And yes Monday the 25th there 1st cold day of winter I'd nothing, the battery was dead and up to then had been running fine but it was an 075/6 not sure of the AH or CCA.. a new 096 72A 650 CCA was £50 from a local battery specialist, that's £5 cheaper than the one I put in the Xantia 2yrs ago

As said in your wanted post...

MK1 clamps are the same.

What's happened to yours Imperial?

Often, if the clamp is missing you'll find it's bolt is either sheared off in the tray or the thread is stripped so you may need a new tray or a tray repair too. They're all the same.

Just be careful with the bolt length if you have an automatic. Use too-long a bolt and you can screw it right into the autobox ECU which lives under the battery tray...

Seems that it has capacity 60Ah which would be good for your car 8-)
(Currently I have a 71Ah 670A under the hood  )

You can try a scrap yard. They are usually left on the car, rusting in peace ... :)
Xsara battery clamps are same type, I'm not sure about Peugeots.
Good luck.
