Your snookered!

You HAVE to have the correct code....short of getting an unlocked one, or another with a code..

citxm is probably right - the default code is 1111 though

My 2nd XM had sat for five years but worked straight away on the code.

They should not lose the code, I've never heard of one doing that, although it is in theory possible as I guess its a tiny eeprom in a way.

Is it actually working properly though with regards to how the lights are responding on it ?

Ignition off + doors locked etc = red light flashing

Ignition on = red light on, type code, green light. Listen for bleep when pressing each number. Faulty keypad membranes rare but not unknown.

If you have both lights on at the same time or any other oddities its likely you have a wiring issue (engine bay multiplugs maybe corroded a bit) , or if the keypad is on a 'flap' like the 406, the wiring can break on the hinge (not difficult to fix but a bit fiddly)

Another useful clue is that the keypad will bleep/whine if you operate the starter without entering a code...

As Andy says, we need to know what the lights on it are doing...
