Just had the dreaded clip go. I always carried a spare, so will have a go this weekend.
Looking at the replacement, I cannot believe how little of the metal spring sides hold in that cable. Especially with force needed to actuate a dozy pull clutch. The knob who dreamed up that spring clip must have been high on pot, and wearing dark glasses.
My question is;
Did anyone on this forum get to make, or find a manufacturer of a metal type clip. ??
If not, I am going to try to fabricate one
Save me doing the pigging job again.
Thanks,
Greg

There was a co that was making them at one time, but not sure they ever sold many / still making them. I read about someone make one similar to your design - they used an old angle grinder spanner, and cut a slot in the middle to accommodate the cable nipple (so the cable went in the side rather than the end) - less likely to fall out I guess!
TBH the new clip should last a good time if the clutch is not too heavy - although make sure you are careful about how you fit it - as there was some talk that if it went i the wrong way round it fouled the pedal when it was pressed down, and this caused it to break soon after fitting....
Job is not that bad if you can manage without having to cut the bolt!

Hi,
Has anyone done a clutch clip on a S2 xantia?. Its a bad job on a S1 car, the S2 is a nightmare to get at. No adjustment at end of cable, fixed end, so where is the adjustment made ??. As the cable leaves the gearbox end, it takes a steep curve downwards, then disappears from view.
SO, anyone here that wants to fit a clip on the car, can drive it away for £175, or I will scrap the bloody thing.
Series 2 SX 1.9TD---longish MOT, taxed till end of Jan 2011-new alternator, radiator, etc.
I have never been so pissed off with cars as much as these citroens. Their designers should be made to do all the jobs on the cars--perhaps we would have better access to the various tasks.
I will start looking for another car now, and it won't be a citroen.

The later 1.9 TurboD has an automatic tensioner which is bolted to the subframe.
I imagine a lot of people get to the stage of wanting to get rid of their Xantia after hours/days (delete as appropriate) mucking about with that clutch clip
Once its on there though and the bolt is the right way around then life should be made much easier. The clip is a failsafe telling you that maybe the clutch or a bush around it could do with changing soon.
I'm staying firmly in the 'stick with a known quantity' crowd Gregg!

Hi,
Found a new clutch cable in the understair junk hole. It is for a pull clutch, but with a threaded adjustable rod at clutch end. I am going to use that one if I can, cos I can't see or get at the adjuster bit on the original.
The early S1 cars seem to have more room around the top of the pedal, whereas they have fixed a load of relays right where a hand could reach on the S2.
I tried again this afternoon to do the job, but could hardly straighten up after being bent at an awkward angle.
The thing is; to have it and the clutch done will cost more than car is worth. That is why I said take it away for £175. A clutch is around £75 from GSF, so for around £250ish, one will have a tidy S2 . I will ring for scrap value tomorrow, to see where to go next. My caravan is in local freeads so I don't need a 1.9 car anymore.
Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
You shouldn't need to get at or see the adjuster on the auto cable - it should have reset now the tension is off, and you should just be able to unhook the cable end at the gearbox. It should reset the tension the first time you press the pedal down. S2 supposed to be easier than S1 due to the spring fitted on the side of the pedal rather than the one round the bolt on S1 with manual cables! Neither is particularly easy though...
