the car suspension seems alot more spongy than the older model c5 when you lean on either of the corners,it bounces up and down for a second or two.is this normal?

So you have tested an older C5 and the newer one seems softer?

I find the later the C5 the harder it rides, within reason.

Well you have said that the car is the "old" shape which makes it a S1 or S2, the suspension is identical for both generations model for model i.e Top spec models will have H3+ and lower spec H3.
So the question is was the S1 you tried the same trim level as the one you are currently looking at?

I would expect the S2 1.6 and the S1 2.0 in SX trim to feel identical.

The S1 2.0 HDI and the S2 1.6HDI may both be H3, but do have different spheres.

Ive not driven a 1.6HDi S2, but ive driven two 2.0 16v S2s and they are noticably firmer and sharper to drive than the very early S1 2.0HDis. My VTR being a very late S1 is in the middle of the two, ride is not as hard as the S2 or as soft as early S1s and the handling is the same.

Which leads me to think Citroen made changes along the C5s life.

That's made me think a bit :-) I suspect that the S2's you tried had 16 inch wheels as opposed to 15 on the S1 so that may make it feel harder and sharper. However there were other changes on the S2 the suspension arms and bushes were modified which I suspect reduced the compliance in the front suspension which would have had the effect of making it sharper. Something I would dearly love to change on my S1 if I could only find a secondhand pair at reasonable prices.

Wasn't aware that there was any changes in the spheres between the 1.6 and the 2.0 can't see why that should be as the weight can't be much different but this obviously could make a big difference in static feel, for the worse it would appear as I regard the S1 as being too hard and making it even harder? might as well buy something with helical steel.

With my C5 being a late model VTR spec it has the 16" wheels from the facelift. Ive heard it mentioned a few times that the late S1s are more like S1.5s, as they do have a few added things and changes which are on the S2.

Such as the bonnet release which swapped sides, rear wiper, even some of the electrics i believe. Though im just going on experiences and what ive read.

Well I guess that shouldn't be a surprise Citroen seem to have done much the same on other cars in the past, evolutionary change on an existing model to prove concepts makes the big model change far less risky, although it does complicate the spares situation particularly identification.
