Adding a 3.5mm socket to my Berlingo Van Radio

Post by nicenswift »

Is it possible to wire a 3.5mm socket to my Berlingo Van CD Player as I would like to plug my MP3 player into it.

If so which button on the cd player would i press to get the MP3 input.

It is a 2005 MK2 (I Think).

The radio I have is the top one pictured here.

I am resonably good with wires and soldering.

Any help guidance would be greatly recieved.

Many Thanks

Hi there, welcome to FCF.

Simple answer to your question: don't know, it'd probably be fiddly.

Have you considered one of those little battery powered FM radio transmitters? Plug one into your mp3 whilst it's in the car and tune in.

That's odd, I had a lot of success with one I got off ebay for a fiver a few years ago.

I bought a similar FM transmitter to use with my wife's MP3 player. Mine is the type which plugs into the cigar lighter socket. It also has extra inputs for an SD acrd and a USB socket but I wanted it for the audio input - similar to the linked item.

I plugged the audio output of the MP3 player into the transmitter and tuned it in. It was awful. The quality was terrible and there was a very low level of modulation so I put it to one side.

A few months later, on a whim I tried it again but this time with an SD card.

It was revelation. The quality and signal level were much improved and, although there was some background hiss, it was perfectly useable. I tried the USB socket as well and that was similarly good.

Conclusion. It obviously depnds on the MP3 player and how high the audio signal level is. Was yours the type which could also accept cards? If so, give it a try.
