Not sure if I've missed something. Have you proved with meter or a bulb that you've got power at the dimmer switch? It's odd to lose a power supply without a fuse blowing (unless you've broken a wire somewhere)

Think I'd disconnect the radio and see if everything reverts back to as it was before you fitted the new radio.

BTW, hope the new radio's working!

I presume you've checked all the fuses and not just the one listed in the handbook (i've sometimes known handbooks to be wrong...)

does your radio have the input on the ISO plug for sidelights (used for auto dimming the display)

i have tried with and without the radio in, putting the old one back in and even messing with the fuses and dimmer switch to no avail, though interestingly the lights on the old radio come on when it is plugged in.

really getting a pain now and quite dangerous lol

please if anyone has any more ideas i will be eternally grateful.

Do you mean the display backlight because the illumination should only come on with the car's lights?

Sorry, I got it mixed up - both radio backlight and illumination ONLY come on with lights - but I found, rather annoyingly, the backlight is not affected by the dimmer.

What do you mean by 'the engine went'?
These engines never die unless driven to hell and back at least 4 times without any servicing!
Even a cam belt failure isn't really that fatal.

I'm sure that given our help and advice, we'll get you back on the road :)

just a thought but i remember jim saying once that pretty much every wire runs under the front crossmember so if your engine "went" because of a cooling fault it might have some bearing there...

but as has been said i'd be amazed if your engine was really dead, these XU sods are very hard wearing. Whereabouts are you? someone might be willing to come have a ganders etc...

the engine is cooked, it needs a new block it has been run passed the point of overheating it has been run untill its sounds dead dead dead. and considering the smallness of the budget id say it had had its day.
