Goodbye Xantia!

Post by n.wotherspoon »

Hi – With much regret I have had to call it a day on my faithful 1997 1.9TD Xantia after one of the front strut tops failed on the motorway coming home from work – The steering started to feel a bit “woolly” & I then noticed a bulge in the bonnet I hadn’t seen before!!!!

Up to this point I have owned her for 10 years and she had always been well maintained, but being an incurable hoarder, I would appreciate some advice on what parts might be worth saving off her before she make her last journey – sniff!

There must be parts that are needed regularly by others and it seems a shame for these to be crushed with the rest – I have room to store some bits and could perhaps list them on fleabay later?

However, I will still be using the forum – though I admit to being something of a lurker! As I now have a 2004 C5 2.2 HDI Estate – It just had to be another Citroen!

REPAIR HER!!

Its very easy on these!! Far better then loosing her!! You only need a strut top and they are quite easy to do!!

Were exactly are you??

May be worth saving the WHOLE car rather then scrap, these are disapearing quickly enough as it is....

Commiserations on your loss. Is/was it a Mk 1 or2?

It's a while since I've seen any report of a top strut failing. I've just replaced the offside top strut on my S1, because the rubber protection in the wheel arch was hanging down, exposing much thick rust. Using a thin screwdriver to remove the laminations of rust, I created a small hole into the engine bay, just as happened 18 months ago on the nearside. The difficulty as I see it is that you can't see how bad the corrosion is, or how weak the strut actually is, until too late.

Hope the C5 proves to be a good'un

Martin - She is/was just on the cusp of the facelift – the bodywork was Mk1 but all the plumbing was facelift – had real fun when she needed a new radiator & bottom hose several years ago!

Paul – I appreciate the sentiment, but afraid the decision has been made – I checked the other strut & found it wasn’t far off going as well (as Martin said - not easy to spot unless you are looking for it!) + she was due new tyres and the costs starting adding up – especially when GSF told me they no longer did the strut tops & they were dealer only.

She is looking a bit sorry for her self on the drive – dented bonnet, a friend of a friend wanted a wing mirror & my son has made off with the speakers!

Ps – I am near Preston, Lancs.

No - she is still sitting there - was hoping to start stripping a few bits this weekend, but I have other jobs taking priority so she has a stay of execution.

I understand scrap cars are in demand & getting good money, so will be weighing her in, not taking to a breakers - I was thinking of taking the cylinder head (which was new some 5/6 years ago), injector pump (Bosch and I believe in demand by the biodiesel fraternity), fans (my series Landy could do with one of them), radiator (again new 5/6 years ago), headlamps and tailgate struts.

Any other parts worth salvaging? If any one is seriously interested in the whole car then please get in touch ASAP!!!
