hmm interesting Paul.

Malcolm is referring to a box I gave him alongside yours, a couple of years ago.. mine appeared to be attached to an XUDT9 engine.. if what you and Malcolm is saying is right, someone must have fitted a 4 speed box to a TD

BE4 is the successor to BE3 and is fitted to myriad more modern PSA cars - I'm pretty sure our Picasso (2.0 HDi 90) uses a BE4 box - mechanical gear link and hydraulic (push - yay!) clutch.

Ahhhh assume I have it wrong then...

I guessed it was an earlyer box... Ive never under stood the coding properly, except the end number, 4 for four speed, and 5 for 5 speed.

i had a closer look at said box, i found it could select 5 forward and 1 reverse gear's,

also
i looked through some haye ass books of lies and only find mention of the BE/14 and BE/15 box's in pug 309's,

my local freindly gear box man says as long as it looks the same from the outside (levers and brackets the only thing diferent could be ratio's,

I've always been a bit puzzled about the difference. As far asI can see the BE4 is just a development from the BE3. The early BE3 had different type clutch arm fittings, but I'm talking pre 87 here. They're both 5-speed, and I think the ratios vary depending upon model. As most of the gearlink arms are pinned, even they can be changed to suit. One advantage the BE4 has is that the gearbox mounting post is fitted on a plate so it's position can be varied to suit the model.

wewll i have both box's side by side on the floor,

the caseing looks nearly identical, appart from the BE4 has like a bridge across the gape at the topish edge of the bell houseing, were you check timming on petrol modle's, and the BE3 ust has a gap,

both have the sensor point for injaction modle's, and also have two threaded points for either type of mountting post,

the other diference is the BE3 has escape ports for the planet gears, which made there bid for freedom in through the clutch houseing and out through the rear of the diff houseing

right

i fitted the BE4 box today and had to nosh a chunk of clutch houseing away for it to clear the TDC sensor,

once it was in place and everything all back together, tried cranking it over,

the starter whired very slow the click click click and would not budge anymore,

first thought was flat battery, but even with jump leads and the negative straight on the engine mount, made no diference

second thought the chunk i took out was not enough, so the clutch houseing was squeezing the sensor and jamming the fly wheel,

nope
as the fly wheel turns freely,

the only other thing i can think is its the wrong starter motor even though it bolted straight on, i think i need to know what models this box is fitted to,

i will check it out tomorow

I know it sounds like basic stuff but did you put the earth lead back onto the gearbox?

yep both conected tight with shack proof washers between gear box and terminal,

besides conecting the neg jump lead directly to the engine mount would/should have overcome a bad earth conection,

there is loads of charge in the car's own and the slave battery,

SORTED

guess what, body earth's, although i hadnt disconected them,

what i noticed today with ignition on the glow plug timmer was clicking like crazzy,

i had already checked yesterday the two earths on the gear box,

alsao i have not driven it yet but it does go into all gears with engine running whilst wheels are off the ground,
