Last Saturday the heater blower on the Xsara suddenly stuck on the second to fastest speed. I noticed that there's a post about a Xantia doing similar and wonder whether the same principle applies?

It has the semi automatic aircon and the speed is the same on almost every setting, including auto and off. It will go to the fastest speed as well but that's hardly an improvement!

It seems the Transister boards that control the speed of the fan is identical to Xantias....
So my guess is the transister board is up the dufff and needs replacing...

Control module (transistors) are on blower motor which is behind the trim, on the passenger side (under the dashboard).
If you have replaced pollen filter then follow the same steps and you'll see blower next to it.

Sounds very similar to C5 in that respect.
I was thinking that the control mechanism behind the knob has become disconnected from the gear mechanism somewhat as it still has one more speed it can go up to.

That may be the speed cursor gear going at an angle and still giving some speed control before it falls out.
The gear retainers break one after the other.
First breakage causes the slider to still work at one end.
What end depends on which breaks first.
When the second retainer breaks, the gear falls out, and you then get a speed close to second everywhere, including on the auto and off positions.

Thanks, that was what I thought. It was the only way I could think of to give the fault with such a limited control of speed.
These bits are at the top behind the dash though, aren't they? Not that I'm averse to diving into the footwells!.
It was really lucky the that Xantia post came up just at the moment I needed it.

Yes, they’re the underside of the slider assembly.
I first took the radio out to see in there, then the surround had to come out to reach the screws.
Also had the ashtray out to reduce the contortions.
Found one of the broken retaining claws in the front tray of the centre console; possibly fell in there when removing the ashtray.
