Xantia blowers

Post by trooper30 »

Hiya fellas long time no speaky I trust you are all doing well ;-)

Anyways the wifes 2000 HDi has a problem with he blowers. Firstly they come one and work fine for about a week, then wont work at all for 2 weeks then works for a week, you get the picture. Her dad spent a small fortune on replaceing all the parts including a brand new fan unit and ac computer and it makes no odds. The car electrition checked the wiring and couldnt find any faults and they had the dash in and out like a fidlers elbow.
So a car sparky cant fix it, a frence specialist cant fix it, buggered if im spending any cash on fools who aint got a clue as the wifes dad has done £500 trying to sort it out.
Sooooooooo is there some type of secret Xantia voodoo i can perform to sort this out? Winter is on its way and need the blowers working for the cold weather.
Any ideas would be appreciated, cheers fellas.

David Hallworth has just been through all this with his HDi

Changed all the obvious, blower transister pack, blower ECU, relay up by drivers throttle, and in the final end, after looking at the ON light on the Air Con button, found there to be a high resistance in the wireing loom behind the dash.. He did this without removing the dash.. with the aid of diagrams, put in a new jumper lead and all has been well I beleve!

He may pop along and put an input in..

Thanks for the links there Clogzz, read them throughly and checked the part I understood but still no dice, to be honest I wouldnt know one end of a multi meter from the other. The mechanical stuff I have no probs with I just havent got a clue on electrics. Just want the bloody fans to work.

Raining today, screen and windows steaming up with the family in the car, not a good thing! If anyone is prepared to have a look at this problem for me I would be willing to pay a reasonable sum or beer tokens for there time and expertise, just really need to get this resolved before the weather worsens,
Cheers fellas.

had this problem with mine a couple of times on different cars the first time it was the ignition switch and the second time it was the plug that plugs into the blower i cut the plug off and replaced with spade connectors. hope that helps.

Just as a quick fix is there a way of getting the blower to come on with the ignition if I give it a power feed, and if so woudl it be the single red and single black feeds into the fan, ot the red and black on the brown plug?
And where could i draw a feed from. If i can get it on full blast when the car is switched on thats beter than nowt for the short term

Right soted it as a short term fix, ran a wire from the battery to the red and black on the fan and it worked full blast. So for the short term made a lead up using a lighter plug wired up direct to the fan. Put lighter plug in fan comes on, plug out off! Yey at last no more misting with the kids in the car.
Talk about Mr Bodge it! But it will do untill i can get it sorted properly.

Congratulations for a revolting bodgie !

Do you plug into the cigarette lighter socket, or did you dangle a lighter socket from a wire straight to the battery ?
If the latter, beware of fireworks without fuse.

No bought a wired fused lighter plug from halfords,

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_165562

Stuck I bit of extension on it, ran it to the fan, job done. Am hoping the fues in the lighter plug will keep it safe, fingers crossed! :D And that about the bigest electrical job I have done on a motor, can do a cylinder head on an Omega V6 blind folded, but gimmie a black and a red wire and Im lost!

Here you go:

It's easier to do the job properly by fitting the relay under the steering column, but as you're au fait with the blower side you can also do it there like my photo.

Cut the red wire (grab the cat, run out of the building before it explodes) and fit a fused relay with a new 12v + feed from the cigar lighter line.

Umm, I don't want to sound overly fussy here but running the blower from the cigar lighter supply is not a good idea long-term. The wiring is not really man enough for the job.

The blower, at full tilt, can flow up to 30A and that's well over the rating of the lightweight lighter wiring.

To do the job properly, a new feed direct from the ignition switch needs to be run.

Totally agree Jim, the cigar lighter has a 20A fuse if memory serves so even if it doesn't draw enough to blow that it could get very close and so make the wires dangerously hot.
It's on my todo list for Cassy.
Did it properly on Jenny and it is actually very simple once you work out where to put the relay and much neater. Photos of it in Jenny are also on my todo list!

The thing is, running it wired via a relay from the cigar lighter so the speed can be controlled is still going to be safer than running it direct at full speed from the cigar lighter, as the blower won't be drawing much on the slower settings.
Definitely not a perminant fix though.

If you're going to that trouble then why not go ahead and fit the relay?
Cut the red wire to the brown 4 wire connector.
Run the feed from the battery to the relay then to the remaining bit of the red wire to the brown connector.
Use the red wire from the ignition switch to switch the relay.
Job done.

How are you getting the feed through the bulkhead though?
