saxo, 02 plate, coolant gauge

hello, i have a saxo and the problem i have with it is as i drive down the road the gauge suddenly increases, as it gets half way the coolant light comes ( within literally 5 mins of driving ) ive checked the coolant level but it seems ok, also the i cant hear the coolant fan cut in and apparently the temp sensors are a common fault. Any tips or answers would be most appreciated.

i'm pretty sure the mk2 saxo is the same as mk1 for this, but there is a blue plug by the thermostat and thats the water temp gauge sender, one pin is for the gauge reading and 1 pin is for the light to come on. If the gauge is reading halfway but the light is on it sounds to me like the sender has died (approx £12)
