Motor Mounts replaced!!

Post by Xantia2.0 »

Just got the Citroén back from the garage at 8.30PM tonight, with a new pair of engine mounts! Turns out the passenger side mount was worn as well, not bad enough to do any damage, but bad enough to be worth changing! Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to drive it home, as I was out, but I'm esured by my mother (who drove it home) it has no knocking when starting and drives great with no knocks over bumps (as it did before with the engine bouncing around). Ahh, Job Done!! Time for a cuppa :)

And the damage was only £221.93!! Sounds like a lot but comes with a 10 year warranty! :D

So, that's at least 10 years motoring without the fear of the engine falling out!!

There is one, which is aggravated by worn top mounts on the motor...

Where the heater hoses meet your firewall, the plastic elbows can break clean off. The car smartly pumps all its coolant over the exhaust and onto the road below.

There is a cheap fix if you plan ahead. Buy any (the cheapest!) hose set with the correct firewall connector. I believe Berlingos used them too. Carefully cut off the outer plastic press fit collars with a hacksaw blade, and slice away the hoses with a razor. This will leave you with a minty siamesed set of heater hose elbows, small enough to fit in a corner of the boot.

When the old part eventually breaks, install the new elbow pair, carefully crumble the old elbow plastic out from inside the heater hoses and secure onto the new elbow with Jubilee clamps.

Our Xantia HDi gives a slight clunk when starting and changing gear.

I replaced the bottom mount when I did the ABS rings on the driveshafts but it hasn't made a difference.

Any idea which one causes this effect?

Thinking of doing the rubber insert on the top engine mount next.

David.

As yours is a manual, sounds like your on the right track to me. I can't tell you from my xantia experience, but from BX TD top mounts seemed to make a real difference even in a fairly strong mount at about 130, 000. THat confirmed what I found in cars before, generally, that the top mounts tend to be the ones that go first. Of course that cannot be always true, as it depends on the particular engine's mount points and their relative strength, but it seems it's the traditional scheme of things for many cars. SO you can often get a great improvement with a top mount change, without compromising the change by not going for the bottom at the same time.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

David, It will probably be one of the top RH mounts. The one that gave way on my old HDi was the rearmost one on the RH side, the one that bolts to the strut tower with three bolts, numbered 1 on the diagram below

If you have the facilities to press out bushes then I have the big main one (number 7) somewhere. If I can find it you can have it for the cost of postage if you want. Brand new but is not in the bag.

Each one costs around £40 from the dealer. The rearmost one comes as a complete casting including the bush as you can see from the diagram.

Am I looking at the wrong thing?

Number 7 to me looks like a nut or a bolt.

Toby, If you don't mind I'll take you up on your offer.

Thanks

David.

Sorry David, I meant number 11.

I'll search for it and let you know once I've found it.
