As with Chris, Shell is cheapest (currently). Otherwise I will go for Total as I pass a filling station on my way to work - it is usually the most expensive though :(

This is a handy resource - they email me twice weekly with the lowest prices within a five mile radius, which can be expanded if desired.
Usually only fill up every fifth week :D

OK first tank of Shell fuel save diesel in Xantia HDi 110 consumed. Result 57.42mpg, previous tank of "normal" Shell diesel 57.50mpg - hardly conclusive.
However, I wouldn't have expected it to be on the evidence of 1 tank full, it will be interesting to see how it averages out over the next few tank fulls.

This thread has reminded me of the supposed efficiency improvements gained if you add acetone to the fuel - petrol or diesel, I think.

Anyone done this; any other information?

2nd tank on this new shell diesel stuff - 59.31mpg (Xantia HDi 110) against 57.42mpg for the first which equates to 58.23 mpg average across both tanks. Maybe there is something in this. I normally use a rolling average across 5 fill-ups with 56mpg being the previous best That would be a 3.5% improvement against Shell's 2% claim which would save me over £90 a year. OK not that much but as it appears to be for nowt I'll take it.

I wonder if its just that it contains more Bio-Diesel as it is known to clear things out and improve an engine and in lower % say upto 40 it should be ok even in the UK winters :)

That's a thought ^

In that case the gains could be cumulative over a few months until the system was thoroughly cleaned.

I'm surprised the 'adding acetone' debate hasn't opened up .......................

Rory - you're getting a bit enthusiastic with the decimal points!
Even if you are topping up to precisely the same level each time and evenif you make exactly the same journies each tankful and even if the weather is exactly the same over each tankful and even if the traffic and the traffic lights and the shoes you wear and the trye pressures and /...............................................

you'll still only be able to claim a fuel consumption accurate to plus-or-minus about 1 mpg.

Don't care how many tankfuls you average over.

OK yes I agree - too many variables in "real world" motoring to be accurate but as Shell is the best price for me + drivers club money off vouchers I use it anyway.

Previous best 5 tank rolling average 56.00 mpg, just used my 5th tank of Shell Fuel Saver - average 57.03 mpg. Not claiming any scientific or statistical validity or significance but interestingly that is a 1.8% difference or approx 1ltr per 50.

Well I filled with the new Shell diesel two weeks ago and so far I've done 640miles and reckon I've another 30 before the fuel low light comes on, best I've had before now on my previous two tankfulls has been 580... it's a bit of a jump just to base it on the new fuel.... but I'd say the car feels better to drive using it.

I have two points to make,
First is that biodiesel contains less energy than pump diesel so I doubt that is the reason, most find that fuel consumption is down by up to 10% (but if like me you brew your own for peanuts who cares) although some did report bettor fuel economy when using Morrisons B30.
Second is that subconsciously people may change there driving stile when testing a new fuel so all but the most stringent tests don't really count.

Ah but bio does help as it cleans the system out after a short while :)

this obviously improves the efficiency of the fuel that is being delivered, ie for the same amount of input a better amount and spray is delivered in the cobustion chamber :)

Veg at least is supposed to lubricate better so the engine doesn't have to work so hard, which may explain why I was able to acheive a 5mph increase in top speed on veg.
I don't know if bio has that property, I would imagine as it has slightly solvent properties that it wouldn't lubricate as well as diesel.

Yes bio does clean out the system as most people find the fuel filter blocks up with all the years of built up crud shortly after they start using it, and it has been reported that it cleans the combustion chamber as well, so yes I suppose it would clean the injectors, but whether it does a bettor job than Millers ect I don't know.

Xac, yes bio has methanol in it but it still has bettor lubrication properties than pump diesel and it's viscosity is about the same.
