Loud Knocking Xantia 1.9td Lexia fault update - SUCCESS
Hi all,
My 1998 1.9TD Xantia with air con was fine until I went too leave work tonight, the engine diagnostic light comes on and stays on and the car sounds horrible, well a loud knocking noise. It seems to start and idle fine but the noise is horrendous.
I was told to change fuel filter and put in some injector cleaner, as it might be a blocked injector. I've done this but no change but I didnt run the car too long so was wandering if I've not given it enough time for the cleaner fluid to get to the injectors!
All your advice would be hugely appreciated.

Thats a symptom of Slipped Timing belt, or as peter says pump timing!
If your a little DIY then check your timing Pin holes in the cam sprocket and injection sprocket and also the TDC pin hole in the Flywheel - hole behind the starter...
If its out, one of these will not line up..

The aux belt tensioner was replaced 3 months ago as the aux belt was running slightly off the pulley, the bearing had collapsed in the pulley. It was done by a Peugeot/Citroen specialist.
I checked the belts tonight no sign of damage and they all seem to be running true!
Would it be a full cambelt change if it has jumped?

Just spoken to a Citroen specialist, apparently there is no margin for error on that engine, if the timing is out, it'll simply smash the valves up and will not run.
The fact it starts and has been driven 5 miles back from when the noise first started, would indicate the timing is fine?
Could it be the cold start mechanism stuck open?

That is not so I'm afraid, I have on a couple of occaisions inadvertantly fitted the belt one tooth out because of not fitting a flywheel location pin, on both occaisions it was retarded and the effect was that it was difficult to start and ran rough but didn't damage anything. I'm sure if it was one tooth advanced it could give the symptoms you describe, although to be fair, the natural inclination if the belt slips is to go retarded which would make the engine quieter if anything. Is it knocking on all cylinders or just one - one knock every two revolutions?

The problem has been diagnosed, its the electronic cold start part of the fuel pump. Its chucking out a error code 144 which cross referances as this part of the bosch pump.
Everything else was checked out, timing was fine so are the injectors. If any of that was at fault, it would be chucking out loads of smoke and it wouldnt run very well, which is the total opposite, no sign of smoke, starts and runs fine apart from the noise.
So thanks for everyone's input much appreciated, my next question is has anyone repaired a pump with this 144 fault? If so where did you get the part and how difficult is it to fix?
