oh I agree it is probably worth spending the money and keeping it on the road, I spent 800 this year on my 1998 xantia estate, but I luv my citroen and I wouldnt fit in many other cars cos I'm very tall. :D

damned nice car and worth the trouble. I see setting up issues with the rear
suspension which may not have been apparent by the garage after whatever
repair was done at the rear and I would expect some recourse from a revisit
to 'tune' this having had such an eye watering bill last week.

The flat battery may suggest they didn't reconnect the alternator after it was
disconnected for MIGing the car - is there a red dash charging light dim/flickering/lit?

Andrew
Well that would be hard to tell because there is NO lights lit, it's completely dead. No click from the starter, nothing. The only reason I got into the car was because I accidentally left it unlocked the night before.

I've spoke to a mechanic (not the one that cocked up this time obviously) and asked him about the suspension and he things it might be a faulty regulator ? I haven't had the bonnet up yet but I will see if the alternator is connected later today. The "STOP" light was on for the last 1 mile of the journey home yesterday.

In fact, you know what, I'll open it now and report back in 2 mins.

Uh-Oh... The serpentine belt... Mhm... Isn't there! So that's why the light was on. And it's probably completely drained my battery and killed it. Oh maaaaaaaan :(

No wonder the car sank!

You have balls of steel, to drive that thing home with no hydraulic pump working. Glad it didn't end in tears!

You mean the serpentine belt drives the hydraulic brakes!? Christ... They did feel very spongy when I pulled into the drive way but I thought it was because it hadn't been driven for a while...

The serpentine belt will power the hydraulic pump and the alternator
- get this sorted and you'll be back up and running. I take it the timing
belt is Ok inside the end covers and it hasn't all been mashed up with
the remnants of the old belt!?

It also runs the power steering, didn't you notice a lack of power steering?

Well as for the cam belt it's never been changed as far as I know. I was hoping it was one of those high millage belts, that could cope with about 100,000 ?

The AA is coming tomorrow at 9.30AM to fit a new serpentine belt and check the hydraulics over to check it's all fine after sitting low for almost 2 days.

If the cam belt is fine it'll start, if it ain't... It won't! I'll just wait and see.

Next time the STOP light goes on I will stop! That is if the car is repairable.

Haha.

Well, she's runnin'! New battery and new serpentine belt. Started right up after a bit of unsteady cranking (think the fuel ran back to the tank through an air leak or something, but that's another job for another day), and the suspension raised again! HOORAY! The AA man advised I got a hydraulics professional to check the whole system over to make sure that won't happen again. But I'm glad to have my car back! :)

I've got to leave tonight (could call it this morning) at 1.00am for a 350 mile journey, then tomorrow at 9am for another 350 mile journey home again! So the Xantia came back into life just in time!

And I know about not going under a car with no axle stands... However did that get into the conversasion ?

Any problems with the Xant I should watch out for on the long journey ?

Rubbish!

£350 is a lot for a xantia and should have been a damm perfect car!!

I bought a 1994 L reg Xantia TD for 80 quid, wanting a windscreen... had one fitted, and four years later not a single failed MOT, and 230k!!!

I have in the past fitted cam belt, rear arm bearings, and spheres, and hydraflush and LHM, oh and fitted Air Con, but thats almost it!!

Rust??? What rust??? Shes perfect underneath!
