Series 2 XM V6 Hydraulic Leak

Post by DHallworth »

I noticed when looking at my XM last night there is a drip from the hydraulic pump which is landing on the alternator.

It looks like it's been happening for a bit as the alternator looks quite green around the casing.

Is there a common spot on the pump that leaks?

Hoping it's just a seal that can be replaced in situ so I don't need to strip it down!

Hi David,

Yes, chances are it'll be the O Rings that seal the plugs at the tops of the two pistons for suspension/brakes. One of these has the hydraulic delivery pipe screwed into it and the other is blank. Both have 19mm hexes on them.

If I was at home I could post a useful picture of it..

Clean up the pump and observe, the leak will soon be apparant.

LHM is not that good for alternators. If it soaks their sensitive end where the regulator, rectifier stack and brushes live it seems to kill them. If however it just soaks their driven end they seem to survive OK.

Slip the alternator off and bath it in solvent. My V6 had the same problem and the alternator seems to be surviving OK following a clean; it was very badly soaked in LHM previously.

Thanks Jim.

Are these O rings still available from Citroen?

I think it must be the blank at the bottom as the top one looks fairly dry.

Can the alternator be taken out without having to remove the entire front end?

Thanks

David.

Yes D they are still!!

The pump is common at leaking from that seal, its the inner pipe nearest the Pump Pully.. BE AWARE: The 12mm union can be extreamilly tight to undo, and sometimes the lower connector sometimes comes undone with it as its sooooo tight! Use an extreamily good Flare Spanner of 12mm, and possibly a 17mm or 18mm open ended spanner on the lower joint to seperate them!

Then WATCH for the spring and plate under it as you unscrew it, if you do it on the car it will also syphon LHM from the tank as its lower then the tank...

Have fun!

the last XANT i fix this on i just clamped the rubber sucktion feed pipe which stoped the citro blood syphoning out of the tank,

the only pump of the same typa as the XANT seems to be this one

PRESS PUMP 6+2 + NON-SINKING OR IMPROVED 6+2 PRESS PUMP,

these are the two diferent size's of seal in any one pump,

the first one being the one that fit's under the main presure feed pipe union,

Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
0000402688 HYD OIL O-RING 1.19 GBP 1.40 GBP 1.40 GBP

0000402687 HYD OIL O-RING 1.50 GBP 1.76 GBP 1.76 GBP

the first one is 19mmX 2.4mm and the second one is 16mmX1.6mm

this is only if your car has the XANT style of pump

The pump on this car is the same as the Xantia pump.

I rang Glasgow Cit today who wanted me to order a minimum of 10 of each. So I politely declined.

They told me Edinburgh had one of them and birmingham 3 of the smaller ones.

I bought all of them so fingers crossed I can get it sorted without having to take the pump off.

Will try and gently clean the alternator with the pressure washer to rid it of LHM.

Is there a way of getting the pump off the car without having to dismantle the entire front end of the car?

Is it even necessary to remove the pump?

I've got 6 O rings in total to overhaul it, 3 green and 3 slightly larger black ones. The big black one at the back of the pump I've decided not to do.
