hi,i have recently purchase a 2001 c5 2.2 hdi sx saloon with 76,000 mls, after reviewing the car before i bought it, i was looking foward to having a good return of miles per gallon(after having a discovery)but unfortunatly this is not the case, can anyone help with this problem as the fuel consumption is shocking to say the least[/b]

It could be one or more of many things!
How does the car drive? If you have not driven another it will make it harder to compare but it should return good performance without having to work it too hard?
The mass air flow sensor started to fail on our 110 SX, no lights or warnings appeared but its fuel economy was heading down to low 30s and peformance was dropping off. I had the codes read on the car and it had a stored fault code of the MAF sensor. Replaced that and its back to normal. I usually get around 43-45MPG from my C5 110 on a day to day basis - i never try for economy. I get nearer 50 on a good long run.
Has the car got a good history? Have the filters been changed recently? Fuel and air?
I often give the air intake a good clean with some intake cleaning spray, i find this helps both the performance and economy.
If your car has been pottered around in then it could benefit from a good 'italian tune up' and give it a good thrashing to clear it out.

That does look fairly poor, I make that approximately 18mpg. Assuming you are paying £1.20/L
The only way to really tell is to brim the tank, drive 'til it's empty, brim it again and calculate from the replenishment fuel and elapsed mileage.
The onboard computer is not reliable, just an estimate really.
I think mine is poor at 32mpg around town and about 50 on a long run.

Well thats not very good at all, 130 miles on £40! My car would easily do another 200 on top of that.
Something certainly doesnt seem right there.

You have Chris56000 located quite close to you. If you contact him he might just read your fault codes and give you an idea of where to look for a resolution to the low mpg problem.
C5 2.2HDi
Just to give you an idea of fuel consumption on my 2001 2.2HDi Ec SE, 106K miles (inc cylinder head rebuild when cambelt failed t 70K miles).
I commute 25 miles each way on a stretch of A1 dual carriageway. For a few years I have "religiously"recorded the mpg with cruise set to 60mph over that 25mph distance, twice daily!. Of course I have to come off cruise occasionally but averaging out over 2-3 years I generally get 58-64mpg. Anything less than 52mpg is very rare and often only occurs after Ive had to disconnect the battery and the injector computer has reset. The better figures are in the summer due to less choke. Now, in Jul, I would be disappointed with less than 60mpg.

What fantasitc MPG, especially from a 2.2. I bet very few C5 owners get near that on a daily basis.

You're not relying on the fuel guage readings are you? The reading is cakculated by the ECU and is not based on any real life readings from the tank sender unit - more's the pity. I find the guage so inaccurate that I disregard it most of the time.sixat6 wrote:hi Ron, i put £40 in and i've done about 130 miles,

I think my gauge is pretty accurate, i dont find it a problem of any sorts.
One time it did go from almost empty to almost a half full, which was a worry. It then went down from half in the normal fashion. However i knew there shouldnt be anywhere near the ammount of fuel it was showing me left in the tank. So when it reached a quatre i filled it up. Ive never been able to get so much fuel in before, it must have been about to run dry.
That is the only problem ive had with the gauage, and its not done it since.
