1999 xantia 2000 blower

Post by gordons »

the blower motor has stopped operating in all fan settings from auto to full

a mechanic (not citroen specialist) friend is going to look at it for me but he has intimated that it is probably something fairly simple like a blown fuse or worn bushes in the motor, failing that the motor may need replacing

to save time he has asked if i can identify the fuse involved and whether a relay is fitted

can anyone oblige? If anyone knows of any common blower faults it would also help.

I don't know if it matters but the car has AC.

many thanks in advance

Hi Gordon,

This "Sticky" will give some pointers.

There are two fuses and a realy. F21 (30A) in the cabin fusebox (under your knee) supplies the blower and F5 supplies the realy.

The relay is mounted in the bottom of the drivers footwell and is on a standoff. It looks a bit of an afterthought and it is!

Often the ignition switch is the culprit, even in a MK2 and this is often the case if the Heated Rear Window has packed up too.

I'd begin checks by measuring for 12V present at the two big wires on the 4-way brown plug on the blower assembly base. You ccan also check, using the "Sticky" the control wire conditions to check the aircon ECU is telling the blower speed regulator proper instructions.

You can also measure voltage going to the motor by measuring on the two single red and black wires on the blower assembly. These go directy to the motor.

Look for a long thread by David Hallworth as he has recently had a similar problem. His thread contains wiring diagrams.

Hope that gives you a bit to get you started.

Gordon,

Here's David's thread on his blower issues...

It's a long but valuable read!

Hi Citro Jim

Wow, thanks not just for a speedy reply but a very detailed and helpful one.

I'm ploughing through all the previous posts and am printing out for my mechanic who I'm confident will find them useful

My gut feeling. probably 100% wrong, is that it is the relay. I believe these can be bought at Maplin. Would you know if there is a particular catalogue number or are they universal?

Also is it possible to be more explicit on the fuse positions. e.g. top row 2nd left. This info would be helpful but don't worry if not available, it's not too big a job to check all the fuses.

Thanks again for your help, I'll keep you posted in about a week on how my mechanic gets on.

If you find out what is causing it, can you let me know?

I've spent hours on mine and got nowhere!

I've changed the relay, the blower motor, the ecu, the control panel and the ignition switch and got nowhere!

My rear heated screen has also packed in which is what led me to thinking mine was ignition switch problems but this doesn't seem to be the case!

David, will do so with pleasure

I was optimistic until your post, now downgraded to hopeful

Any chance you can remember which relay you fitted?

The relay is a standard automotive one. I'd be amazed if Maplin sell them.

Best source is your loacl scrappy. Almost every car in the whole world uses the same relays.

Else that, any good factor will have them.

For testing purposes I borrowed the relay from my Activa which was a known good one.

Has your mechanic mate had a chance to look at your heater yet?

I'm going to have another go at mine tonight.

In my experience, mechanics are not auto-electricians, despite them having to deal with it as when.

Perhaps you'd be better off seeking an auto-electrician who does nothing but electrics. I can recommend a local, mobile one in my area. Where are you based, Gordon?

Hi Mike

I guess Newcastle on Tyne will be a little bit too far for him to travel but thanks for the offer

I did try looking for an auto electrician but most of those recommended have gone out of business the remainder are very expensive, however I have got one sole trader left to try but he is proving a bit difficult to get a hold of.

Gordon.
I had an auto electrician out to recharge mine and my son's aircon systems a couple of years ago.
He also fixed my rear screen - wouldn't open, also replaced several burned out relays in my son's 306.
His bill was very reasonable at just over £100 for the lot.

If you wish to contact him he is:
Lee Snowdon.
East Durham Auto Electrics

He was recommended by the Citroen specialist that I always use, George Fraser of Toward Road, Sunderland (George doesn't do electrics above the very basic stuff.

Hello,

With the help of my father I managed to fix mine tonight.

You might want to have a look at the last post in my thread.
