CO2 Welding Gas

Post by G4EIY »

There I was happily welding the o/s inner wing of my trusty BX, then the gas run out, I had to finish using my old arc welder, that was a shock, did not realize how easy mig welding is in caparison !!!!.

I was using pub gas, and this normally lasts me about 2 years.

On seeking a replacement, I was informed that the gas is now a mix, and also the connections are different.
Does any one know if the gas mix is suitable for welding, or do I have to revert to the small expensive bottles?.

Some pub gas contains nitrogen which will not do the welding any favours! Might still be possible to get pure CO2 - ask your friendly landlord. You might have to buy a few pints first though

Another trouble I've found is most companies with any sort of health and safety policy won't fill untested bottles.

I've now started using a local fire extinguisher company. I got one of their a bottles for 60 quid with a five year test, and they are happy fill it for about 6 quid ago. When the five years up they will re-test and give it another certificate. No more hassles.

My Dad is using a fire extinguisher company too now, he had the same hassle getting the bottles pressure tested and getting a new valve fitted. Previously he had been buying the gas from a company that made soft drinks but they stopped doing it and didnt even want their bottles back!

You think you have troubles ? Just try finding a cheap / convenient supplier of o2, I doubt it's worth talking to a Fire extinguisher company :-).
