Theories on driveshafts please

Post by MikeT »

On a PSA V6 3.0 what would/could be the reasons for having to replace both drivehshafts at ~80K miles?

Possibly been driven over rough ground at some point in its life and the boots have been caught and after a while the grease has been lost before the boot has been replaced leading to high wear rate already being then set in to the joints?

Or just badly made :)

I failed to add, this a manual box if it makes any difference. Also, apparently the ABS rings can't be bought seperately, you have to buy them on the D/S.

A good motor factor may be able to supply replacement driveshafts, even for a V6 at a semi sensible price.

I know the ABS rings are not readily available separately, as I wanted one for a 406 2.0 as it had become detached (took a while to figure that ABS fault out!) , but there were not so. I've heard of people attempting to weld the ABS ring back but its never quite right if you do manage it.

Welding it back wouldn't be good as it would mean the shaft was out of balance and the ring would never run quite true to be honest..

What's the failure of the shafts? Outer CVs / Inner tir-axes / ABS ring problems?

Maybe the previous owner liked leaving it on full lock and wrecked the CVs, or had a vicious turn out of his drive / road that he liked to take at full power on full lock

Oh I know, I just mentioned I had seen it done but its never quite right if you do attempt it. It's best classed as an emergency repair (or ignore it and the ABS light till you get a new shaft) , but I've seen odd ABS problems caused by a stationary ring while moving, resulting in lack of front brakes (as EBFD and ABS 'decided' that wheel was locked)

If it's due to ABS rings then the reason is self explanatory, otherwise an aggressive driver could see them off that quickly easily !!

FWIW I know that on a CX driving across rough ground on high suspension could kill the tri axe extremely quickly, please please don't ask me how I know that :-)

If the car had PSA wheels without a centre hole to assist wheel balancing I can quite believe that the driveshafts may have been changed in desperation at trying to get rid of vibration.

sounds like a previous owner was a little heavy on the throttle and liked the sounds of screeching tyres wheelspinning away from a standing start.
a good way to kill driveshafts off by 80,000 miles if n ot before that.

regards Nigel.
