Citroen C15 1.8 diesel Cambelt interval

Post by blinkinink »

Hi,

I bought a Citroen C15 van, its on a 2000 reg (x) and it had no service history.
Its done 113,000miles, drives great and starts every morning without fail.
As far as i know, its the 1769cc (1.8) engine, but people keep saying either DW8, or XUD7 or whatever else there is, and i dont know what to think.
I have to do the CV joint next week as the boot is split (looks more complicated than i'd hoped too) and i thought i'd look at getting the Cambelt changed while i was at it, but i dont know what engine i have and i'm hoping the interval stated in the haynes of 48,000miles is a little low because the garage quoted me £270 to do and recommended i change the water pump too at extra cost of £115.

seems a bit pricey, and if i dont have to do it i wont.
In the mean time i'm looking for a cheaper quote.

Any ideas? would be really appreciated, thanks :?

Assuming it's a diesel, it will be an XUD engine - the DW8 is the same engine for all practical purposes. Check the V5 Registration document - it will tell you for certain what the engine capacity is. A little research via Google will tell for certain exactly what version (principally changes to the injection system) of the engine it has.

It will be an un-turbocharged version of the XUDT9 engine in most diesel Xantias. The belt needs changing more frequently than the original Citroen service schedule stated (72,000 miles).
Conventional wisdom is 5 years, 48,000 miles. It's several hours work (the Visa is probably easier than a Xantia, so I'd say about 6 hours). The belt drives the water pump which often doesn't last 100,000 miles, and depends on the tensioners to stay on. Pump or tensioner failure is likely to be as catastrophic for the engine as the belt breaking. Change the pump as a precaution, and the tensioners if there is the slightest doubt that they are in less than perfect condition. Get a quote from an independent Citroen specialist.

If you tell forum members whereabouts you live, someone may be able to recommend a reliable independent garage.

hi and welcome

i would think being that late it is a DW8 lump, and as said it should be replaced at 72K,

why is it that much on top when adding a water pump, as the pump is only around 20 odd quid, and everything is removed already to access the water pump when dismantling for a cam belt, the only thing is you need to re/fill the coolant and bleed the system,

were abouts are you based

Looking at Autodata, DW8 engines weren't fitted until 2001. Previously they used XUD7.

You do possibly have the XUD engine, though cambelts should be done every 72K miles.

If it's 1769 it will be XUD7, if it's DW8 it wil be 1868cc (or thereabouts, can't remeber the exact figure). The only difference so far as the cam belt is concerned is a manual tensioner on the DW8 vs the well known spring loaded one on the XUD7.

6 hours for the cambelt??? I'd find another garage.... I doubt it's more than 3 for an experienced mechanic. Even a 1.9TD in a Xantia with A/C is only just over 4, and the covers are a swine on that with the turbo pipes in the way!

Autodata gives 4.5 hours to do the water pump on the XUD, which I suppose includes the belt.
