That banging noise is probably the brake caliper corrosion issue.
It forces the caliper out of line and makes a noise. Hits the insde edge of the wheel and grinds away.

I am trying to remove my bolts from the caliper. Not easy.

Good luck with your car.

I advise anyone with a C5 to regularily, every year or service, remove the rear calipers and grease between the faces. This should stop corrosion building up but it also means the bolts are never stuck in.

Just before i bought my C5 it had new discs, pads and callipers on the rear, i have the bill for £375 for the job. Ive since removed them, cleaned everything up and refitted with a layer of grease. There was already corrosion starting to build up.

Its quite common if the caliper gets too badly out of position it will come into contact with the wheel - this is especially noticable on C5s with steel wheels.

New pads should be fitted if the caliper has been badly out of line.
