Xantia HDi Glow Plugs

Post by DHallworth »

Our Xantia HDi started to run on 3 cylinders when initially started. It would do this just until you'd revved it a little to break the idle. Whilst it was doing this it would smoke a lot too.

Today I decided to replace the glow plugs with a brand new set of Lucas ones.

Now though, I don't even get the glow plug light flash onto the dashboard. The Lexia also gives me faults which come back after being cleared too.

Permanent Fault: 2 additional and preheating circuit. Faulty Circuit.

Temporary Fault: Pre-Post heating relay circuit. Short circuit to positive.

Temporary Fault: Pre-Post heating relay circuit. Short circuit to earth or open circuit.

I've cleared these several times but they seem to persist in coming back.

I just wondered if anyone had any ideas.

Thanks

David.

Sounds like the pre-post relay (or something in that circuit) has shorted out. First check the fuses then the relevant wiring, connectors and relay(s).

Thanks for the suggestion Mike.

Don't suppose you know where the relay is on the HDi do you?

you didnt allow the centre post of any of the new glow plug's to turn, as you tightened the feed wire terminals up by any chance, as this could cause a short circuit in the circuit,

disconect the link lead from all of the glow plugs and test for continuity from the posative terminal/s down to earth,

have you checked all the old plug' s accross a battery just to see how many were dead,

I'm afraid I'm not familiar with HDI's but I'd guess it's in the engine bay fuse box? Were the fuses ok?

David,

Same place as all later Xantias with D turbos, - to the right of the battery, bolted onto the inner wing....

Citronut's sugestion about twisting the pole is a good one, easyilly done!

I noticed that when i was gently tightening them they looked like the tip was on rubber and was flexible so i purposfully didn't tighten them much, they're just nipped really.

I'm sure the codes stored were the same as the ones that were there before I changed them too.

Is there anything special about the glow plug relay or is it just a relay that I could change with a spare I've got on the shelf?

Hi David,

Do you have a wiring diagram as the my TD is preheating control unit where the relay is fitted as part of the unit. As I have a spare unit again.

It is located on the passenger wing beside the battery.

Hi Kenny,

I don't have a diagram, no.

I was going to have a fiddle with it at some point.

I was in the Citroen dealer in Glasgow today ordering an ignition switch from them for the Xantia.

I asked them about the little black box that controls the glow plugs.

They had one in stock and was priced at £33 Inc VAT.

As the error message that I am getting is the same as it was with the old glow plugs in I decided I'd give it a go.

It's a black box with a green plastic back on it with provision for a multi plug to connect to it.

I'll try changing this tonight and will update this thread with my findings.

Thanks for your help guys.

David.

Well I've changed the pre heat box on the car tonight.

When I first started the car I still didn't see the glow plug light on the dashboard.

I went out with the Lexia and cleared the fault codes on the car, turned the ignition on and off a couple of times and then started the car a couple of times and it's not logged any fault codes again.

I'm thinking that if the old box has been faulty I'm used to seeing the glow plug light on all the time. I'm hoping that this has solved the problem anyway. I'll rescan it in a day or two and see.

Hi David,

re the ignition switch I have 2 spare which are easy enough to swap around ie the original key barrel from the rear connector switch.

I've done it on mine. It would save you £120 at least.

Hi Kenny,

Thanks for the offer.

I've ordered a new one today from the dealer. It was £113 +VAT from the dealer. That's made to order from the factory to fit our key.

Thanks again,

David.

D,

Are you missing "Our" point, the Key part WILL swap onto the rear part, as I was trying to tell you.. theres none of this key matching rubbish then that the stealers are dooing to you...

No matter, you've ordered it now..

I guess as long as it sorts the car..

IIRC with the HDi's i've driven the Glowplug light barely comes on during the warmer climes. i think the longest i saw it on for with the 90hdi i had was about 5 seconds. key in ignition, turn to run, put seatbelt on and crank :)

Always fired first time as well.
