2.0 hdi 138hp

Post by hdi_man »

I notice that in the new C5 citroen has replaced the 138hp engine with a 160 one, its 2s faster 0-62. Is this simply a remapped engine ?

I mean would a remap or tuning box provide the same from the 138hp engine

And do they fit an up-graded DMF? When ever I've thought about remapping my 138hp, I've always wondered about the extra demand on the clutch.

Your 138BHP 2.0HDi will go to around 170bhp with a good remap, as usually its around a 30% increase on the standard power. So you would be close to the performance of the 2.2HDi 173bhp engine.

Though i too wonder about how the DMF would like the extra power. Given that they usually fail at some point, more power would only shorten its life.

PSA/Ford have a new generation of 140/160bhp 2.0 litre diesels.

Amongst the changes are.

A new cDPF fitted, the cylinder head bowl has been modified.

New water cooler on the EGR valve

New injectors with more nozzles

New injector pump.. pressure has been uprated from 1800 bar to 2000 bar

New PCM ECU, which now allows for more flexibility with pilot injections

Modifications to the Turbo but not sure what.

Looking at the 140bhp unit (Mondeo) the power is up just a little as is maximum torque but the spread of torque is far wider which should improve drivability. The 160bhp unit shares the very wide spread of torque which probably has the most to do with the improved performance rather than just the extra 20bhp.

New engines are cleaner and more economical as well.

The 160bhp Auto HDi has a much reduced towing limit on the C5 for some reason which rules it out for me.

just been quoted £300 to remap with Angel Tuning...they say it will add 35hp and 55 lbs torque. seems a good deal but will get used to the car 1st before considering this.

Is that for a generic remap or a custom tuned remap?

generic I think :

Our charge for the 2.0 HDi 138 is £275.00 including VAT. This price includes the engine tuning work to add up to 35bhp, (55lb ft torque) pre and post testing, acceleration testing and travel to your home or workplace.

The place ive used for remapping before takes the data from the car, sends it to a tuning company who make a map suitable for the specific car, they send it back and its then put into the car. The original map is kept on file should we want to put the car back to normal.

That same place has used generic maps in the past, when one map is used for every car of the same type. They found that it gave much poorer result, some cars would perform well, other wouldnt. So they only do it the semi-custom way.

Obviously its not fully a custom map, as that requires being on a rolling road while fiddling to get the a mixture of performance and durability from the 'map.

But tuning a map for a specific ECU is better than just having a generic one put in. As every car, even though they might be the same engine and spec are not exactly the same.

Obviously a generic remap might state 35bhp increase, but this will vary from car to car.

Also, you need to be careful when your car is under warranty, as if warranty work is needed and the dealer finds out its 'mapped (hopefully it will be considerably quicker than before) then it may void the warranty.

yes I was thinking of waiting a year and a bit until the warranty is up until I do anything as they could upgrade the ECU and remove the map without knowing as well

How do you find the 138 in the new C5?

Ive been in one which seemed fairly good for performance.

Our estate is a 138 and that does perform very well. Its quite impressive to think a good remap would take it to over 170BHP, maybe nearer 180.

I'm very happy with it ! it revs freely to the redline like my 1.6 hdi and feels very torquey to drive.

it is a Big car though, I've stuggled to park it a few time in spaces as I'm not used to driving something so big.

very quiet, a number of people have commented on that. also seats are very comfortable. Suspension feels great to me on the roads, soaking up bumps nicely, can also feel it stiffens up a bit in sport mode. best ride I've ever had in a car to be honest!

always good to know there is more BHP available if I need to get it mapped !

I have the 138 in the new C5 but I wanted an Auto. I was coming from a 220bhp 1475kg 6 Speed Manual to a 138bhp 1733kg 6 Speed Auto.

To be honest I was expecting the C5 to feel really sluggish to me but the test drive really suprised me, keeping up with traffic is effortless and overtaking performance is good.
Only big difference is the performance off the line, the heavy C5 takes a lot of effort to get moving and it feels as though there is a torque limit in 1st gear as it pulls stronger in 2nd. To be honest Ford do this to their diesels as well both manual and automatic versions.
As for refinement I get to drive a lot of hire cars through my work and the new C5 has by far the quietest 4 cylinder diesel I've come across. On light to medium throttle is virtually silent.

You both obviously like your 138s. I too think its a fantastic engine, extremely smooth, very refined and very lively. MPG is truely excellent too.

The New C5 saloon is slightly longer than the previous C5 hatch. The New C5 tourer is slightly a bit shorter than the previous C5 estate. They arelarge cars and if your used to a smaller car i guess it takes some getting used to. Mine felt huge at first but now it just feels like a normal sized car, the extremities are very easily judged now ive got used to it.

Do you have the optional parking pack? That looks pretty good, with the parking space size guide.
