Rapid Tyre Wear - Xantia 2 HDi 1999 110bhp
Hi all..
Im not sure whats going on - not even sure if its rapid cornering, but the owner says not.
Firstly, the tracking IS spot on, its been checked and checked again.
Front pair of tyres, lasted about 5 months, and not a lot of miles.. near side worn on outer edge only, quite badly, off side a little but not as bad.
Lower ball joints appear fine, also track rod ends, with no play in them.. drop links are also in good order..
My question is, any one got any other ideas as to possible causes of the rapid wear?? The car is a NON hydractive car too, so that can be ruled out. Local tyre indy sugested possibly car running to high, though the height looks fine to me, andIve not adjusted it at all.
Thanks
Paul

The car should have 205 60 15's on her, but is fitted with 195 55 15..
I cant really see narrower tyres causing this - but Im not really a tyre expert..
Id have thought driving style - she likes a bit of "Foot down " style..

drop links dont cause tyre wear at all because they dont affect the caster/camber or track,
the only other thing i wouls sudgest is arm bush's/P bush and front arm bush,
also lower swivle's can't be discarded unless you have split it from the wishbone so you can have a realy good feel

Hi Paul
If there is excessive wear on the outer edges its got to be towing in, the only other possible cause could be incorrect camber angle on both wheels - very unlikely
The only other reasons for general wear I can think of are poor quality tyres and/or excessive cornering/braking forces.
I get 30k + from my XM tyres by gentle driving.

I asked about brand of tyre because I used to have the same problem and eventually discovered that Xantia's don't like cheap tyres !!
Lower price tyres typically have less strong shoulders and are susceptible to excessive scrub wear on some cars.
Still not wanting to spend too much on tyres as I run the Xantia on a budget I found that Marangoni suit the Xantia well but are well priced.

Rapid wear to the outside is something that I allways put down to the roundabout syndrome, but you dont live in Milton Keynes do you
I allways rekon that the Citroen suspension, when in good order, just lets you drive round the roundabouts too fast without realising it.
I have seen Xantias and XM's get through the front nearside tyre very quickly and after checking the joints and geometry, have allways put it down to this.
Regards
Martin.

Does the car drive straight? or does it tend to steer into the curb slightly requiring about 1fingers worth of pressure to keep it straight?
