Post by sijrayner »

what oil is best for the 2.2Hdi model, mine looks like it is the original oil from 2001, also thinking of renewing the gearbox fluid, any probs with this and what should i use ? car is an auto box.
err, just read some older posts, as there is still no manual available for these cars i may have misread but do i have to remove the undertray just to change the oil. what about gearbox fluid ?

I would highly recommend Morris oil. Well priced and superb quality. Have used it in all my diesel Citroens and never had a problem.
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

Yes - if you want to do it properly. Some guys say you can suck the oil out - but not everyone agrees.

You can suck th eoil out of some cars very effectively, infact i often get more out with the sucker than dropping the oil out of the sump. As you can suck out the filter housing etc. Though if your quick with it and dont let it suck out everything and fiddle around with the tube to get it right into the bottom of the sump then it will be useless.

However, its only worth doing this on cars with a faper filter, if its a screw on type its pointless as you still need to remove the undertray to avoid making a bad mess when removing the screw on filter. So you might as well have the sump plug out and drain it like that.

I use the sucker on the 2.0HDi 16v as that has a paper filter on the top of the engine, so very esy and quick to do an oil change on that. The onler 2.0HDi 8Vs have a screw on filter so the undertray must be removed.

Not sure what the 2.2HDi is like, paper cartridge or screw on?

Sucking the oil out also worked very well on the 1.6HDi.

As I understand it the C5 dipstick assembly has been specifically designed to facilitate the use of suction devices it's certainly what I use.

Does it get all the oil out? well it doesn't get as much out as removing the drain plug and leaving it to drain overnight but it probably gets as much out as removing the plug and allowing it to drain for ten minutes.

However in the greater scheme of things it's irrelevant, because the amount of old oil that will remain in the oil pump and oil gallerys is far greater than any oil remaining in the sump / engine walls whatever method is used to remove the old oil.

The 2.2 recommended oils are to spec ACEA B3-98 or B1-98

5W40 or 5W30 synthetics or 10W40 semi synth. Citroen claim better fuel consumption with the 5W40 or 5W30 and the oil level must never be above the max level.

Auto gearbox uses Esso LT71141 and it isn't cheap, some people will claim that Dextron III can be used don't believe them.

Changing the oil is not easy the max that can be drained is 3-4 litres
leaving leaving between 5 and 4 litres in the box / torque converter.

Best that can be done is probably to change three litres at a time three times with a couple of thousand between each change.

Draining is done via drain plug, filling is done via the breather where the dipstick would have been had it been on a Xantia .
There is a level plug on the side of the box, to ensure that the box is not overfilled.
Overfilling is a no no. to use level plug etc. requires that the car be absolutely level difficult if doing it in the road. Possibly best way is to accurately measure the amount taken out and replace with exactly the same amount at the same temperature.
