Yes i agree with that. I get it on some cars depending on what shoes i have one.

I try and not touch the metal of the car. Just use the door handle and touch the window instead of the door when closing it from the outside.

Do those rubbery strips actually work? Surely the tyres should do a similar thing?

My first car was a a 1939 Ford Prefect and I pased my driving test just after the Suez crises and petrol rationing finished - work that one out.

It's a common problem, it's the car that has the static not you, I've had a few jolts as I go to close the doors.

Those earthing straps do work, we used to use them on the baggage sorters at work to discharge the static. If one of them had fallen off and you touched one of the trays you certainly knew it

They are supposed to. They were changed many years back to include a percentage of carbon which is supposed to allow leakage of static to earth.

It can be the vehicle that builds up static but in most cases it happens when you slide out of your seat due to friction between it and your clothing, so its you that has the charge, in which case it makes little difference whether the car is earthed or not. Only happens if you have dry insulating type soles on your shoes.

I've been getting shocks recently as I climb out of the Xantia but have only just noticed today, it doesn't happen in the Vauxhawful Ashtray. It's obviously something to do with the interior fabrics - my guess is it's the carpet - I don't have any rubber mats in the footwell.
