Xantia Bits n Bobs
Hey Guys,
I'm actually starting to get on with our Xantia HDi Exclusive at the moment and as a result it's getting the work it needs doing done.
The heater isn't fixed yet but I think it's the ignition switch that's giving problems so Citroen XM is posting me one to try so I can either fix it or eliminate it.
I changed the injectors on the car on Saturday for a set from a 306 HDi 90 to see if they would cure the smoking problem. That they did! The car now runs much better with no smoke. The injectors didn't need coding like some people thought they might either!
Yesterday I changed the crank shaft pulley, spring loaded tensioner and aux belt, what a difference! The pulley on the tensioner was flapping in the breeze... wow, what a difference, it's so much quieter now!
The car seems to feel a bit crashy over bumps, it feels and sounds harsh but when pushing on the car it seems to have plenty travel in the spheres. Is this a good enough test or would changing the spheres anyway be worth a go?
I've also noticed that there's a bit of a clunk when you let your foot off the clutch after changing gear. I wondered if it could be a worn engine mount but will need to look into that at some point.
Also, can you replace just wishbone bushes on these or do they need the whole wishbone?
Thanks
David.

David,
Any tips on getting the aux belt off - I had a quick look at mine last weekend (got to tackle the alternator some time!) - and couldn't even get a spanner near the spring tensioner. I wondered actually if it might be easier to just tighten up the eccentric, and then pin the spring tensioner and forget about it! Suppose I will have to tackle the cambelt soon too, but need to build some courage for that one...

Hi Richard,
When I did mine I used a flexi head ratchet ring spanner.
Because a normal combination spanner has an angle on the ring they won't go onto the tensioner.
The ratchet rings I have are perfectly flat so they will go on no problem. Once it's on, push it back towards the bulkhead and flick the belt off the hydraulic pump.
David.

Hi Kenny,
I've been busy with work over the last few days so haven't really had much time to do anything with the car.
My girl friend is using my 306 at the moment as it's got a heater that works so in between doing jobs on the Xantia I'm putting thick socks and a jacket on and using this thing with no heater to get to n from work as it keeps the mileage off the C6.
I'm working late most evenings these days (till 8 or 9pm) so finding time to pop through is challenging as you are about an hour and a half from me according to Google Maps.
I'll keep you posted.
Did you have a go at your tensioner?
David.

The balljoint is in the hub on the Xantia, so would not come with a new arm. The Xantia arms are substantial forged affairs, and I have not seen them as spares, so I rather suspect it's bushes only. I looked at the job a few weeks back - it appears that the arm needs to slide outwards from the subframe, but the ARB is in the way, so the obvious thing to do is rotate the ARB upwards. Of course if you haven't taken the link to the HC off first.... I suspect this is where the uninitiated go wrong - you are not the first, addo, to find that the car has come back from new bushes needing the front height sorted out!
