pug problem but someone here might be able to help ;-)

Post by colinxm »

Hi all, I've just replaced the head gasket on my wife's pug 307 1.6 petrol. While doing this I also cleaned up the inside of the throttle housing using brake cleaner (bad move ?) problem is that after reassembly the car now runs like a pig with the car saying that there is an anti-pollution problem. I've put my super cheapo OBD11 fault code reader on it and have got the fault code: 123 (throttle position sensor/switch A circuit high input). I thought that maybe some of the brake cleaner had managed to get into the electronics but couldn't find anything visably amiss after opening up the unit while the multiplug contacts seem as good as new.
Anyone come across this kind of problem before or have any ideas ?

Cheers Colin.P

Does this car have an accelerator cable connected to the throttle body or is it fly by wire like many other cars. If it is fly by wire the position sensor is either at the pedal or else it is under the bonnet connected to the end of the throttle cable. In either case your brake cleaner is unlikely to have had any ill effect. Even if the car is not fly by wire the throttle position potentiometer (sensor) is usually well sealed and unlikely to have been damaged. More likely is a bad connection or death of the sensor from natural causes.
When diagnosing a problem read and note the codes. Clear all codes, then drive or run the vehicle and see what ones return.

I cant imagine either that brake cleaner would do the motorised throttle any harm.

Squirted brake cleaner into the motorised throttle several times, and it actually did it good.

Thanks gents, I'll have a look at the wiring at the weekend, it's a "fly by wire" system so no cable. I must have broken a wire or connection when removing the head so hopefully it shouldn't be too hard to find.

I'll let you know how I get on, Colin.P

As far as I know p0123 refers to the pedal position sensor on a fly by wire engine. On many cars including some Ford, Opel, Toyota, VW models this is part of the accelerator pedal. On Peugeot & Citroen HDI vehicles it is connected to the pedal by the accelerator cable. I don't know how the 1.6 petrol is laid out.
Remember first clear all codes. Then check what ones wont clear or come back whenyou try to drive the car.

Thanks for the replies gents, I've had a little play with it at the weekend but no joy...
I read off the fault codes:

0121 Throttle position sensor/switch A Circuit range/performance problem

0122 Throttle position sensor/switch A Circuit low input

0123 Throttle position sensor/switch A Circuit high input

1157 Lack of downstream heated O2 sensor (HO2S 22) Switch, Sensor indicates lean (Bank #2)

All codes except 0123 can and have been cleared but 0123 stays put and the car runs like a pig...

I've got a Chinese Lexia diagnostic kit on order but until it arrives can anyone help? I should say that I did open the butterfly by hand when cleaning the throttle housing, would this upset it and it maybe needs to be reset somehow ?

Thanks Colin.P

No, the butterfly has nothing to reset.
When you moved it, the ECU didn’t know because the motor was turned off.
I just squirted carby cleaner through the top into the spindles.
To move the shaft, I grabbed the external spring holder.
The grey cover at the other end isn’t worth taking off; it’s just an electric motor with nothing that can be helped.
