Xantia V6 'Ticking'
Hi everyone.
For sometime now my V6 has on occasion been 'ticking' as in perhaps one Hydraulic Tappet, this is now quite loud (especially as I now have a new exhaust system fitted) it 'comes and go's' as if the tappet rotates BUT it doesn't increase in tapping rate with the engine speed. A slight increase in throttle pressure can sometimes result in a jump in ticking speed for a few seconds. Under the bonnet it is quite difficult to hear it, I don't think it is the accumulator sphere, it seems to be on the nearside though. Anyone else experienced similar?

Hi Ian,
If its a rapid ticking, which is totally unaffected by engine RPM, comes and goes at what seems like totally random times, then I'd say its the carbon canister valve doing its thing. Totally normal

If memory service me correctly its up front near the battery, its findable on the mk2 by following one of the vacuum tubes from the throttle body. On the mk1 I think its really buried to the point of having to take the wheel liner (is that the correct term?) off to access. Never done a mk1 myself this is from memory of watching Jim working on his V6.

Depends if it's a MK1 or a MK2. On a MK1 it's buried in under the wing and thus inaudible. It's where you say it is on the MK2 though Dom and they can make a racket.
Mine ticks occasionally. When cold and idling. Just a touch of revs and it clears, never to return. That is a tappet, no doubt about it, but at nearly 169K I'm not over-anxious about it.
Mine ticks like a ten-bob watch after switching off when nicely hot. That's just the exhaust cooling down..
Ian, is the ticking only there when cold?

No Jim.. it can be audible when cold or hot and is definately seems louder inside the cabin... I'll have a go at recording the sound and post it on here.

Hi
OK I have found it.. you can actually feel the small brown cannister pulsing which corresponds with each 'tick'. I recorded the sound but can't see a way to upload it so here is a photo.. it is located just in front of the battery (you can see the battery clamp in the pic) thanks for putting my mind at rest.

Yep that's the valve I'm on about, nothing to worry about there Ian, just let it tick away

I'm seriously considering moving it or insulating it... it's embarassing, my passengers think there is something wrong with the engine. I have explained that Citroens don't have faults, they have characteristics!

On the Mk1 Ian, it is both wrapped in high density foam and buried under the inner wing. That applies to the MK1 Activa and V6.f00lzz wrote:I'm seriously considering moving it or insulating it
Strangely, where the MK2 valve is located, the MK1 has a straight joint in the pipework; almost as that was where it was going to go but for some reason, they decided at the last minute to move it under the wing..
